For newcomers, welcome; I am Rita Joy, a farmer’s daughter from Montana who connected with a Canadian during college.
I married him, and this year celebrates our 28th anniversary.
We raised our 3 boys while residing and working at a year round Christian camp situated on an island near Vancouver Island, quite different from my prairie upbringing.
Two years ago, our careers shifted, leading us to a nearby town where we acquired our initial home, a charming little townhouse; this is the space you will see today.

Relocating required a significant reduction in our possessions, which was a real challenge; we transitioned from having a family room, living room, and dining room to just this arrangement:

Determining what fits and operates well within our new area remains an ongoing process.
However, the more time we spend here, the more I appreciate it; adding some Spring elements to this compact area was a delightful experience.
Here are 3 methods I used to revitalize the Living Room for Spring:
Styling the Bookcase
The Billy Bookcase system from Ikea is invaluable in our small setting; the lower compartments conceal office supplies and books, while the upper shelves allow for personal touches.
The inspiration for the gold accents came from a clearance sale at Homesense, providing a subtle gleam and shimmer.
Incorporating greenery, both artificial and genuine, introduces vibrant life and color against the white backdrop.
The mirror featuring gold “spokes” was also an affordable find at Homesense, originally on a stand with a marble base; since it was damaged and slightly askew, I detached it and hung it on the wall (note the marble base beneath the greenery ball in the bookcase above…)
I acquired the extra-large light bulbs during an after Christmas sale and needed a spot for them; I wrapped a pink pom-pom garland around the wire, using the pom-poms to conceal the picture frame hooks, with the cord tucked behind the bookcase side; in the evening, the battery operation is easily switched on, and it looks wonderful!
Displaying Artwork
Vibrant artwork is a fantastic means to inject a fresh, bold color into a room; this print from Minted, previously in our bedroom, now brightens the Living & Dining Room with its aqua, yellow, and pink hues.
Reducing Furniture Pieces
We replaced our substantial wooden coffee table with 2 streamlined end tables from Superstore.
We appreciate both their aesthetic and functionality; being light, they can be easily moved to any spot, enhancing movement within the confined area.
Introducing Fresh Flowers
Incorporating floral arrangements into any area is always a wonderful touch; I have both artificial examples, such as the one on the Dining Room buffet, and real blooms.
For this occasion, I selected a generous quantity of pink carnations because of their extended longevity.
