Cheerful Wood Signs with Folkart Chalk

These charming painted wooden signs crafted with Decoart Chalk offer a bright and joyful way to adorn bare wall areas.

Paint proves to be a wonderful, affordable method for home decoration; applying it to a wall can completely change a room, and on wood, it becomes true art!

My recent endeavor addressed an empty wall in our primary bathroom, utilizing a novel paint from Folkart.

DIY Painted Signs with Folkart Home Decor Chalk

Materials Required:

  • Folkart Home Decor Chalk (I employed the shades Yellow Crochet, White Adirondack, and Grotto)

Initially, I began on a small piece of artwork.

A collection of signs, ready for painting, was stored in our basement.

My spouse had previously prepared these by staining the cut boards, assembling them, and affixing strapping to the reverse side. (A guide on this process is available here.)

Given the bathroom walls are now a lovely Seasalt blue, I felt a touch of yellow would complement the artwork nicely.

Following the instructions, I first mixed the paint and applied it with a brush; I concur that it glides on effortlessly. It is a relatively dense paint that provides excellent coverage.

I transferred a phrase sourced from Pinterest (the original source is lost to me, apologies) using graphite paper and a wooden stylus.

Next, I used thinned acrylic white paint and a brush to write the words, subsequently dry-brushing some random white accents across the sign.

I must note that a highlight of using Folkart Chalk is how smoothly acrylic paint applies, making the 'painting' of text significantly simpler.

I finalized it by applying a bit of antique wax along the borders, sporadically on the front, and between the boards, then coating the entire sign with clear wax.

Wax application was new to me, so expectations were uncertain. This wax is liquid and very simple to use; after one hour, the instructions advise 'buffing it off.' I used a cloth, but rather than a strong shine, it achieved a smooth, 'sealed' look that enhanced the color slightly.

Here is the final result:

Because I enjoyed painting that piece so much, I created a second one, using grotto as the primary hue and sealing it with clear wax. They are displayed together here.
