A Look Back: Christmas Magic on Montana Prairies

Closing my eyes and picturing the most magical time of year transports me to my childhood Christmases on the Montana prairies. For us, Christmas wasn't just one event at our farmhouse; it was a dual celebration, each possessing its own distinct charm and customs.

Part 1: Thanksgiving/Christmas Festivity at Grandma & Grandpa’s Home

During the deep winter, my grandparents, who traveled for snow, swapped the cold Montana air for the warmth of Texas, merging our Thanksgiving into a dual holiday with Christmas. Grandma Bernice and Grandpa Tom's residence was filled with family, laughter, and the excitement of opening gifts near the small end table Christmas tree's iridescent shimmer.

Part 2: The Second Christmas – A Wonderful Evening

On one notable Christmas, my mother transformed our living room into a festive wonderland. A cardboard fireplace, decorated with twinkle lights and mom’s treasured Christmas angel collection, cast a gentle radiance. The anticipation of my older brother's return from college amplified the Christmas excitement.

Part 3: The Expanding Family and Festive Energy

As the youngest, I enjoyed the joyful commotion that grew over the years. With more nieces and nephews, our family farmhouse became vibrant. The oak dining table was fully set with mom’s grand Christmas meal, and the air vibrated with the energy of children, infants, and the prospect of a lively gift exchange by the tree.

Part 4: Unique Stocking Customs and Santa’s Gifts

Our family had peculiar traditions, such as the stocking ritual where we eagerly awaited Santa’s presents. Stockings hung on chairs and would 'magically' fill overnight, holding the thrill of major gifts that didn't fit. I recall the year Santa gifted me a child-sized desk and my initial Texas Instruments calculator, inspiring hours of imaginative play.

Part 5: Christmas Eve Blizzard and a New Custom

The custom of opening one gift on Christmas Eve had its own story. After enduring a Montana blizzard to attend the church service, the idea arose when my brother, feeling chilled, quietly showed his gift under the tree—a trapper hat. From that snowy night onward, 'open one gift on Christmas Eve' became a beloved part of our festive observance.

Recalling Christmas Past from childhood brings warmth, as the excitement for the following Christmas always started right away, which brought me renewed happiness!

Parenting Through the Holiday Season

Beginning the Christmas season as a parent ushered in a new phase filled with resourcefulness, hurdles, and deep, meaningful moments. Moving to the West Coast of British Columbia with my Canadian husband meant facing the challenge of being far from both our families, thousands of miles away.

Part One: Quiet Holidays and Distance's Solitude

The initial plan for alternating Christmases was hampered by the vast distance from our relatives, coupled with hazardous roads and limited funds; flights for a family of five were often unattainable. The peaceful nature of our celebrations evoked a yearning for the vibrant excitement of my childhood.

Part Two: Creating Holiday Wonder Affordably

Financial constraints during the years of raising children inspired creative gift solutions. Relying on missionary support meant irregular monthly income, yet this spurred inventive ways to make Christmas special for our three boys. Annual thrift shopping adventures and crafting unique items for Christmas craft fairs added a creative flair to our holidays.

Part Three: Finding Delight in MLM Opportunities

Although I had mixed feelings about MLM businesses, they provided both happiness and a means to earn extra money for gifts. Hosting cooking events for Pampered Chef and organizing card-making workshops with a stamp company allowed me to sell products I enjoyed without a major financial outlay, which helped fund family presents.

Part Four: Christmas with Grandma: A New Family Custom

The poignant memory of my father's passing at age 28 initiated a new tradition: celebrating Christmas with Grandma. To prevent the sadness of spending that initial Christmas alone without Dad, Mom established this new custom, and Grandma's arrival, complete with her large checked bag 'Big Ben' holding thoughtful gifts, became a treasured annual event, easing the isolation of being away from extended kin.

Welcoming Grandparenthood: A 'Christmas with the Kranks' Vibe

Each Christmas season presents its own blend of surprises and joys as life progresses. Currently, my husband and I are in the heartwarming Grandparent season, a time rich with laughter, affection, and the sweet presence of our little granddaughter. I invite you to share the joyful and humorous moments defining our 'Christmas with the Kranks' year.

Part One: 'Christmas with the Kranks' – A Known Story

  • Film Context: The movie “Christmas with the Kranks,” based on John Grisham’s novel “Skipping Christmas,” portrays a couple preparing for their first Christmas without children at home.
  • Our Reflection: Similar to the Kranks, we anticipated our first Christmas as empty nesters, planning a different kind of holiday celebration.

Part Two: Unforeseen Happiness – A Call Changes Everything

  • Surprise Visit: While expecting an empty nest Christmas, a delightful call from one of our sons brought unexpected cheer. He and his wife decided to visit before Christmas, wonderfully altering our original arrangements.
  • Joyful Gathering: We are delighted to celebrate with our son and daughter-in-law in person, adding a special dimension to this year's festivities.

Part Three: Embracing Grandparenthood – A Unique Love

  • New Role: Becoming grandparents has been an unparalleled source of delight; as others have cautioned, the affection we hold for our little granddaughter is indescribable.
  • Digital Links: Technology allows us to cherish moments speaking with our sweet granddaughter via Facebook Messenger video; her innocent waves and greetings are heartwarming and unforgettable.
  • Holiday Cheer: Our recent video call featured singing Jingle Bells and Away in a Manger, forging special Christmas memories despite the physical separation.

Navigating this 'Christmas with the Kranks' year underscores how life's turns often yield delightful surprises. The Grandparent season has infused our holidays with added warmth, making this life chapter truly remarkable; in this grandparent role, every effort to craft a magical Christmas is steeped in love, thankfulness, and hope for many more cherished moments ahead.

The Authentic Christmas Narrative

It never escapes my notice that while drafting this audio program, tears streamed down my face. Oh, the depth of my affection for Christmas! Yet, reflections on Christmases gone by will inevitably – ultimately – bring to mind cherished ones who are no longer with us to share in the festivities. It is a sorrowful reality.

And, it brings to mind the depth of my appreciation for the promise of Heaven, and the very purpose we observe Christmas – Jesus.

Christmas serves as the season when we reflect upon and honor his entrance into the world. He entered our midst to BE AMONG US.

He abandoned his celestial dwelling of flawlessness to undergo earthly existence. He entered the world, traversed unpaved pathways, labored under demanding conditions, tended to those without sustenance, and shared transformative, life-affirming teachings.

He is acquainted with the feelings of defeat and letdown, and he holds profound compassion for us when we traverse those same trials.

Jesus did not vow that life on this planet would be free from grief, but He did vow to accompany us at every turn. He is perpetually accessible through prayer, and fortunately, He never places us on standby when we cry out to Him.

Therefore, if the holiday season leaves you feeling isolated, perhaps you would appreciate revisiting the origins and reading the Christmas account. You can locate it in Luke chapter two, and a quick online search for the Christmas narrative will yield numerous results.
