This post was refreshed in September 2020 with up-to-date links. Discover how the 10-item autumn collection from Old Navy fits a mix-and-match approach!
I have always looked up to bloggers who share try-on experiences from fitting rooms and give their honest opinions on fit and appearance. I have picked up many useful style tips that way, though I had never attempted it myself – until just a few days ago.
My spouse and I took the hour-and-a-half trip to Old Navy on Labour Day Monday. I had a well-thought-out strategy and a list ready. All plans went out the window the moment I saw the fitting room queue was nearly 15 people deep!
When I walked up to the fitting room attendant with my cart full of dozens of items, she kindly mentioned,
"Madam, you will need to select only 10 pieces to bring inside at once."

Oh, dear. My heart began to pound and my hands turned clammy. All I could picture was the people waiting behind me in line sighing as I took forever in that much-desired fitting room!
I urgently chose 10 items and stepped inside the room.
Fortunately, all those initial 10 pieces fit perfectly and I adored them. So, I never ended up adding more from my cart to try on. These worked out wonderfully…

A few years back, I watched a transformative clip about the 10-Piece Outfit. Inspired by the French way of styling, it is a mix-and-match method of getting dressed. I am a fan!
If you are seeking casual style wardrobe essentials, this method might prove useful. Keep in mind, if mustard and deep rose aren't your preferred shades, simply choose others that suit you.
Begin with Jeans and a T-shirt

Although I wanted to test out every pair of jeans that day, I walked away with only two. These are the Mid-rise Rockstar Super Skinny jeans (Regular length, Size 6). They are too long for my 5 foot 1-1/2 inch height, but I don't mind cuffing them or tucking them in.
Sleeveless tops are not usually my choice, but I figured this adorable polka-dot swing top would make a lovely layering piece under a sweater. It can be worn untucked or tucked (as demonstrated later in the photos).
The brown mule shoes were an impromptu pick from the shelf, and I ended up absolutely adoring them. They complement every outfit perfectly.
Choose a Sweater in a Hue you Adore

I am a huge fan of topping an outfit with an open-front cardigan. Sweater length is certainly a matter of taste, but even though I am short, I adore long cardigans! (This one is a small. I would likely size up to a medium just to have a bit more room.) Old Navy offers a wonderful array of colored cardigan options.
Seek Out a Top with Beautiful Drape and Embellishments

I always maintain that life is too short for dull blouses!! I make it a point to search for tops that are intriguing and enjoyable. Since I carry more weight on my upper half, finding tops that fit well is always a challenge for me.
This pin-tuck linen-blend blouse was utterly adorable and comfortable. It sits a bit low in the front, so I paired it with the tank top from the first photo. However, a lovely camisole would work nicely too. This specific blouse also comes in a gorgeous deep rose shade, which I think would be stunning.
(I am wearing a Medium)
Find a patterned top in colors you adore

I fell head-over-heels for the plaid tunic top and chose to pair it with pink Pixie pants. It is a long shirt and truly cute worn untucked as well. (Sadly, that photo turned out so blurry I cannot share it with you!)
I selected a medium size, and while I genuinely enjoyed the look, it had a tendency to open at the bust – an issue I frequently encounter with button-down styles.
The pixie pants came in a size six and felt slightly long in the rise, though they were incredibly comfortable. I already own a pair of black pixie pants that I wear regularly to the office. With a wide array of colors and patterns available, you can easily find one that suits your style.
I matched the plaid shirt with a puff vest, an accessory I always appreciate. These vests are also available in a diverse selection of shades.
Experiment with a dress to ease the change into a new season.

Honestly, this dress caught me off guard. Typically, I avoid garments with a structured waist, but this piece featured elastic in the back and I adored how the material flowed.
The fully lined construction and slightly longer back hem made it exceptionally comfortable.
2020 update: Instead of a dress, this year I chose to experiment with a black jumpsuit!
Combine a sleeveless dress with a sweater for cooler temperatures.

Apologies for the slightly blurred image, but I wanted to demonstrate how a sleeveless dress can become a Fall staple. Adding a long sweater instantly makes it suitable for cooler days.
Incorporate a skirt to unlock numerous additional outfit combinations!

Finally, I tried on a corduroy skirt that I had been longing for quite some time. Although it is labeled a "mini skirt," on someone of my stature, it doesn't feel overly short.
Wouldn't this look adorable paired with tights and tall boots? Or perhaps with that mustard vest in place of a sweater?
To summarize, these are 10 Fall wardrobe essentials from Old Navy that coordinate perfectly for a full season of styling!
