I recently had the chance to step inside the enchanting sliding double doors of Hobby Lobby, even though as a Canadian, such visits are infrequent!

After planning my purchases, I loaded a cart with items for my Dining Room farmhouse shelves. Following that, I spent considerable time examining the Christmas merchandise.

The temptation to fill another cart with holiday decor was strong, especially with the 40% off sale! However, I opted to save those ideas and attempt a recreation using my home craft supplies.

Therefore, this homemade Christmas decoration is inspired by the holiday section at Hobby Lobby.

Materials Required:

  • A container, wooden block, or piece of styrofoam for wrapping
  • Burlap material
  • Scissors
  • Glue gun and adhesive
  • Plaid cloth (cotton or flannel) to act as the 'ribbon'
  • Artificial Christmas greenery

Wrap the burlap fabric around the longest side of the box and trim where the edges meet.

A key point for this wrapping is that, unlike standard wrapping, you should avoid any overlap; since burlap is substantial, overlapping will create noticeable bulges at the seams.

After adjusting the burlap length, apply a line of glue along the bottom center of the box and join the ends. Don't worry if the edges don't align perfectly, as the fabric ribbon will conceal this seam.

Clip the side corner and remove all excess burlap from the side's bottom section.

Ensure you cut away as much extra burlap as possible. Once the lower side piece is trimmed, simply fold and secure the side flap with glue.

Tear fabric strips for the 'ribbon' and affix them with glue.

After securing all the burlap, it's time for the final touches! I tore a long strip of plain cotton fabric, then measured and cut two smaller strips. Gluing them sequentially, I wrapped them from the base and secured them across the top.

Adhere the faux greenery on top

Placing a few sprigs of faux greenery along with a tiny pine cone cleverly disguises the ribbon seams, adding a wonderful festive touch!

They are now perfect for placement on my farmhouse shelves to bring some holiday joy.

More Inspiration:

  • Arrange various dimensions of burlap-wrapped presents across the table or group them on a serving tray as a centerpiece.
  • Craft small, wrapped burlap presents to accompany individual place settings at the Christmas table.
  • A pile of substantial burlap-wrapped gifts beneath a tree in a nook offers a charming farmhouse aesthetic.
