Create simple DIY shelves with brackets for a farmhouse aesthetic on a budget

I became captivated by the Fixer Upper series and Joanna Gaines's design sense from the very first episode.
Witnessing the home makeovers in a single hour was truly remarkable (though amusing!). While home selections and demolition scenes were engaging, the final 15 minutes were my absolute favorite.
I watched closely as Joanna styled the residences with lovely details. I observed her preference for blending warm wood hues with blacks, metals, greenery, and antique elements. Her characteristic Fixer Upper style farmhouse shelves were also frequently featured.

After relocating to our townhouse two years ago, I aimed to incorporate some of Joanna’s modern farmhouse flair into our builder-grade living area.
Achieving this has been a process, but it is gradually taking shape. The shiplap wall and custom Billy bookcases established the mood for our main living space.
Furthermore, a gallery wallnew couch</a enhanced the look.

Guide to Building Fixer Upper Style Farmhouse Shelves

Materials Required for wood shelves with brackets:
- Black metal L-brackets suitable for a 7 inch board (I sourced mine at half price from Hobby Lobby, but a similar bracket is available here)
- 1 x 4 boards cut to the necessary lengths (Your local building supply store might offer cutting services.)
- level
- 1 1/2 inch wood screws
- 3/4 inch wood screws
- screwdriver or drill fitted with screwdriver bits
- measuring tape
- pencil
- wood stain
- stud finder
Prepare the shelf boards
Instead of opting for a single wide plank for our shelving units, we decided to utilize two planks per shelf, leaving a subtle gap between them.
We acquired four pieces of 1×4 lumber from our neighborhood hardware shop and trimmed them to match the dimensions of the dining room sideboard.
Next, I applied Minwax stain in the Early American hue using a cloth and allowed the pieces to dry thoroughly.
Locate wall studs with a stud finder
Given that the shelves will bear weight, secure wall attachment is essential. One method involves fastening screws into the wooden studs behind the drywall. If studs aren't available at your desired bracket placement, drywall anchors will be necessary to support the shelf's weight.
Determine the desired shelf height and install the first bracket.
After securing the top screw to the initial bracket, employ a level to verify the bracket hangs plumb. Adjust as needed to ensure it is perfectly vertical.
Indicate where the matching bracket should go.
To guarantee a straight installation, position a board across the top of the brackets and rest a level on its surface. Shift the second bracket (prior to fastening it) until the level's bubble centers itself. Once aligned, secure the second bracket in place.
Place the boards onto the brackets and fasten from below using 3/4 inch wood screws.
Repeat the installation process for the second bracket set.
Adorn the shelves with your preferred farmhouse accents!
Now that the shelves are firmly in place, it's time for the enjoyable part – styling them!
During our recent getaway to Washington state, I stumbled upon a (miraculous?) half-off promotion at Hobby Lobby.
I was flooded with choices of items I adored – metal, wood, and foliage – all marked down by half!
After careful consideration, planning, and weighing every purchase (and two subsequent trips to Hobby Lobby…), I ultimately selected pieces I adore, artfully arranged on their new farmhouse shelves.
I had envisioned shelving above the buffet for quite some time, and it's rewarding to see the project completed.
Thanks to Hobby Lobby's half-off event, the total cost for the shelves and brackets came to just $28!
The decorative pieces resting upon them were pricier…;)
