Quick Sugar Cookie Frosting Recipe

Create your own masterful frosting effortlessly in mere moments for rolled sugar cookies.

I have recently enjoyed watching holiday baking contests on the Food Network.

It is a pleasure to observe contestants creating lovely and tasty confections as they compete against the clock.

However, a notable element is missing from these shows—actual recipes!

I am amazed at how they appear to instinctively know the precise amounts to combine in a mixing bowl!

Therefore, today I urge you to apply this intuitive approach when crafting homemade frosting.

Easy Frosting for sugar cookies

Simple Frosting From Scratch Without Following Directions

My mother-in-law mentioned many years ago that I was unnecessarily complicating frosting.

She showed me how to blend a portion in a cereal bowl in just a few minutes—no recipe needed!

This frosting is flavorful, easy to spread, and removes all the pressure from frosting rolled sugar cookies.

Follow these steps to prepare your own (no recipe) simple frosting:

The necessary components are:

  • Powdered sugar
  • Butter
  • Vanilla or almond extract
  • Milk

Equipment required for this straightforward frosting recipe:

  • A cereal bowl for a smaller quantity
  • A mixer and mixing bowl for a larger quantity
  • A sifter

Phase 1: Beat the butter until it achieves a soft and airy texture

The butter should be softened, not melted, for this stage. For this post, I prepared a half batch of my favored rolled sugar cookies and chilled them overnight. When ready to frost, I began with 1/4 cup softened butter in a cereal bowl and stirred it with a spoon until fluffy.

Next, incorporate enough sifted powdered sugar until the mixture achieves a very firm and difficult-to-stir consistency.

I discovered that using sifted powdered sugar prevents lumps, resulting in a wonderfully smooth frosting. I gradually incorporated small amounts of sifted powdered sugar into my fluffy butter until it became extremely stiff and resistant to stirring.

Then, introduce your preferred flavor.

For rolled sugar cookies, almond extract is my go-to flavoring, though vanilla extract is equally delightful. Remember, as you practice culinary mastery, use the amount of flavoring that suits your taste.

Begin with a small measure, and then augment as necessary.

In my small quantity batch, I utilized half a capful of almond extract.

Incorporate only enough milk into this simple powdered sugar frosting so that it flows smoothly with a knife while still maintaining its structure.

Proceed with step 4: Incorporate milk gradually, a small amount at a time, ensuring thorough mixing after every addition.

Similar to step 3, add milk incrementally (perhaps 1 teaspoon at a time) and mix thoroughly following each addition. You will be pleasantly surprised by the minimal amount of milk required! Continue stirring until the frosting is spreadable but not watery.

Should you inadvertently add excess milk, do not worry; simply thicken it by adding a bit more powdered sugar.

Step 5: Separate the frosting into various bowls if you intend to color your sugar cookies with multiple hues.

Once the frosting reaches the perfect, easily spreadable consistency, introduce your selected food coloring.

Are you hesitant to attempt this frosting without a specific recipe guide?

I completely understand that feeling! ;) If you seek a concrete recipe, I located this homemade sugar cookie frosting that resembles mine, though it yields a significantly larger quantity.

Update : I recently shared an Instagram reel demonstrating this simple sugar cookie frosting. You can view it here:

I accurately measured all ingredients this time! For a thick icing suitable for piping, here is the Sugar Cookie Frosting Recipe:

  • 1/4 cup butter at room temperature
  • 2 1/3 cups sifted powdered sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon almond extract
  • 2 Tablespoons plus 2 teaspoons milk
  • a small amount of Wilton’s moss green paste food colouring

When I opted to spread the icing rather than pipe it, I added small increments of milk, stirring well after each addition until it achieved a spreadable texture. An Instagram reel showing me spreading sugar cookie icing is available here: You can watch it here:

Beginner guidance on frosting sugar cookies is available here:

  • Apply icing to sugar cookies only after they have finished baking and reached full coolness.
  • Utilize a straight spreader knife, such as this one (affiliate link), to ensure the icing spreads smoothly.
  • Icing frozen cookies is simpler than those just out of the oven; consider freezing them beforehand if time permits.
  • Ensure sugar cookies are entirely cool before attempting to frost them, otherwise, the icing will soften and spread uncontrollably.
  • To achieve a swirl effect, move the icing gently back and forth across the cookie surface.
  • Sprinkles and decorative sugar can disguise minor imperfections and result in a very attractive look!
  • If you plan to pipe this frosting, incorporate extra powdered sugar to achieve a thicker consistency; it must be stiff to maintain its shape when piped.

Are these Christmas Sugar Cookies suitable for freezing?

Absolutely! I freeze them either prior to icing or afterward; both methods work excellently.
