A Gift for the Mountain Biker

To the Norco Bike Company,

I realize you likely do not recall my name as it has been nearly two decades since my last purchase from your company.

Allow me to provide a quick reminder of our past.

My husband possesses a strong enthusiasm for mountain biking, though twenty years ago, he lacked a bicycle.

Determined to help, I decided to engage in crafting to generate some supplementary funds. Unbeknownst to him, the Christmas gift I prepared was for him while he assisted me with items at a local craft fair.

One evening, I casually inquired about the cost of a bike should we be able to manage it.

He replied without much thought, stating it was around $350.00.

I devoted myself to sewing, painting, and crafting with great effort, hoping to reach that financial target.

And I succeeded, nearly down to the final penny.

My husband was incredibly delighted and still chuckles about the $350.00 figure.

He remarked, “Had I known your plans, I would have suggested a significantly greater amount!”

Over the last twenty years, that Norco Mountaineer SL has covered numerous miles.

It carried our first son, pulled our last son, and even participated in one notable family bike outing. {I must admit I am not the most athletic member of the family…}

In the last year, my husband has resumed riding seriously, finding benefits not only for his heart but also for his peace of mind. He leaves for a few hours and returns sweaty yet smiling; I find this truly wonderful.

Therefore, I once again aimed to buy him a new bicycle. I retrieved all my craft materials and have been painting, sewing, and writing on this blog, all while saving the money for the “bike fund”.

This time, however, I kept my husband informed from the start, allowing him to begin researching the bike of his choice.

Observing his excitement was as enjoyable as watching our young sons look through the Sears Christmas Wish Book catalogue.

Bike periodicals sit by the bedside table, and local errands include stops at bicycle stores. Our discussions have covered technical terms such as front suspension, hydraulic brakes, and “hard-tail”.

We have always believed that the excitement of waiting is a major part of the enjoyment…

This month arrived, and finally, the account held sufficient shekels for the desired bike.

Yet, sometimes the practicalities of life meet our aspirations.

The difficult reality presented itself through a single small envelope in the mail.

As you might surmise… the “bike fund” is now required for car insurance.

Dear Norco Bike Company, we are still hoping to connect with you again in the future, but for now, we appreciate you crafting a bicycle designed to endure over 20 years.

Respectfully,

The Partner of the Mountain Biking Man

Also, to my Mountain Biking Man, I feel regretful that I cannot purchase that gleaming new bicycle for a special Father’s Day present. Please understand that my affection for you is immeasurable. Remain optimistic; I will continue my sewing, painting, and writing endeavors. Let's remain patient; your ship bike will arrive eventually.

Meanwhile, thank you for patiently and generously embracing this period of waiting…
