Brighten Your Entryway with a Simple Yellow Refresh
Here on the West Coast, we’ve entered that slow, gray stretch of the year I like to call “graydums.” Gray skies and steady rain become the default, and it’s easy to start missing sunlight—and to wish for a little extra Vitamin D. That dreary weather made me notice my entryway all the more: after I removed the Christmas arrangement, it looked tired and neglected. The space needed a cheerful update.
Before I started, the small area felt pitiful and uninspired (the crooked house number didn’t help). I was juggling a basement project when I rediscovered a set of small egg-shaped candles that belonged to my grandmother. They felt charmingly vintage and suggested a springtime palette instantly.

Inspired, I set out to give the entryway a quick refresh, focusing on a splash of sunshine yellow to lift the mood. Yellow is an instant mood-booster and works well in small doses to create a welcoming, sunny impression—even when the weather outside is dull.
The makeover was simple and inexpensive. I painted a small wooden shelf a light yellow and arranged clear glass vases and smaller accents on top to keep the space feeling fresh and airy. The clear vases are perfect for seasonal blooms—tulips are just starting to emerge in my garden, but grocery-store stems would be lovely as well.
To add some handmade personality and a festive touch, I made a pennant banner and draped it across the entry. These pennant banners—also called bunting—are everywhere right now for a reason: they’re cheerful, easy to make, and create an instant sense of celebration. Mine was a quick DIY: cut triangles from scrapbook paper or lightweight fabric, attach them to twine, and secure with a bit of tape or small clothespins. The end result feels like the doorway is throwing a tiny welcome party.

For artwork, I printed a free spring graphic and “matted” it by taping it to a piece of leftover shelving material to create a simple, rustic frame. This was a useful trick because I had run out of conventional frames and wanted a quick, budget-friendly solution that still looked intentional. Placing the print on the yellow shelf tied the colors together and reinforced the sunny theme.
The little display relied on layering: a small artwork propped against the wall, clear vases with or without flowers, the vintage egg candles for a nostalgic note, and the pennant banner above. Nothing had to match perfectly; the goal was warmth and cheer rather than precision. The mix of textures—from glass to painted wood to delicate paper pennants—kept the arrangement interesting and personable.
As I was finishing up, the clouds finally parted and the sun peeked out. It felt like a small celebration—the room’s new warmth reflecting the light, even if just for a moment. That little beam of sunlight made the makeover feel complete, and it reminded me how much we appreciate daylight once it’s scarce.
Whether you’re dealing with a long stretch of gray weather or just want a fresh seasonal update, a small, focused entryway refresh can make a big difference. A bright paint accent, a few clear vases for blooms, a simple handmade banner, and a treasured vintage piece are all you need to lift the mood at your front door.
Have a sunshiny day—and if the weather’s dull where you are, consider bringing a little yellow inside to chase the gray away.
