The Challenge

Is there anything more annoying than gazing at greasy, dusty wooden blinds and dreading the cleanup process?

That was my reality for quite a while! (hiding my face in embarrassment…) I’ve since learned that neglecting wooden blinds is a widespread issue among homeowners. The truth is, while these blinds offer fantastic privacy for our living spaces, they can be somewhat demanding when it comes to maintenance.

Cleaning becomes even trickier in kitchen settings, as grease often combines with the natural dust buildup that occurs over time. This was precisely the situation in our household. Since our main living area flows seamlessly from the living room into the kitchen, and our current kitchen vent fan is completely ineffective, the wooden blinds in the dining and living rooms had transformed into a sticky, greasy, dusty eyesore.

However, we found that with a bit of dedication and hard work, you can bring your wooden blinds back to their former splendor. In this post, I’ll share some reliable techniques for tackling even the most soiled blinds. So, roll up your sleeves, cue some tunes, and let’s get to work! You’ll be happy you put in the effort.

Cleaning Lightly Dusty Wooden Blinds

If your blinds haven’t suffered the same level of neglect as ours have, removing simple dust is a much simpler task. Here is the process for cleaning dusty wooden blinds:

  1. Fully close the blinds so the slats hang downward. Attach a soft brush to your vacuum and glide it across the slats, moving from the top downwards.
  2. Next, use a microfiber cloth that has been slightly dampened with water (the Norwex envirocloth is my top choice) and begin at the top, wiping downwards.
  3. Once you’ve finished one side, tilt the slats upward to reveal the reverse side. Repeat the cleaning routine, but this time, vacuum and wipe from the bottom moving upwards.
  4. Conclude by buffing the surface with a clean, dry microfiber cloth.

Mistakes to Avoid When Washing Wooden Blinds

I’d love to claim there’s a super quick and easy five-minute method for tackling greasy, dusty wooden blinds. I’ve spent considerable time researching to find the ultimate shortcut for this dreaded chore.

I’ve come across suggestions to remove them from the windows and soak them in the bathtub, and I even thought about taking them outside to rinse with a garden hose.

Nevertheless, I’ve encountered many online warnings explaining why you should steer clear of those particular cleaning methods.

Excessive water on the metal blind mechanism can lead to rust and hinder their proper function. Since wooden blinds can be costly to replace, I made it a priority to sidestep that issue.

Be prepared for some effort when tackling greasy, dusty blinds.

As part of my resolution to organize and refresh the home within thirty days (yes, I’m already lagging behind!), I kicked off the first week in our main living areas and decided it was high time to address the tedious task of cleaning the wooden blinds.

My husband kindly volunteered to assist. I wouldn’t describe the task as enjoyable, but tackling it together meant we completed it faster than anticipated. (We had six blinds to attend to!)

Assemble the Necessary Supplies for Cleaning Wooden Blinds

  • A multi-purpose cleaner with grease-fighting capabilities. We opted for a simple homemade mixture of one part Dawn dish soap and one part vinegar in a spray bottle, as it serves as my go-to secret weapon for how to clean glass shower doors.
  • Microfiber cloths
  • A bucket filled with warm water

The solution will begin breaking down the accumulated dust and grease from the blind surface. (As I mentioned… they were quite grim!)

  1. Using a damp microfiber cloth, glide across each wooden slat horizontally, moving from the upper side downward.

I admit, this process is somewhat demanding, and it essentially is. Nevertheless, it remains the sole method to remove embedded dirt and grime from both the rear and front of the slats.

  1. Frequently rinse your microfiber cloth (as it will quickly fill with dirt and grease). Having a container of warm water close at hand is useful. After completing one full pass over the blind, perform a second pass using only water to ensure all cleaning residue is removed.
  2. Angle the blind slats downward and finish with a dry microfiber wipe, starting at the summit and progressing to the base. Reverse the slat direction to face upward, then wipe the lower surface with a dry cloth moving from the base upward to ensure complete drying.

Mission accomplished! I realize this involved several stages and required some investment of time, but now that the task is finished, you will undoubtedly be delighted with your freshly sparkling wooden blinds!
