Greetings, everyone! Have you ever caught yourself gazing at your shower grout lines, questioning if they’ll ever return to their former immaculate state? Do not worry! Today, we are exploring the craft of grout cleaning – a task that might require some effort but yields great rewards, leaving your shower and floors sparkling in no time.
Recently, I viewed a popular Tik Tok clip demonstrating how to refresh tile grout using bowl cleaner. Subsequently, I observed someone attempt this technique in their own home. The grout became spotless, though the approach reminded me of the period we had elegant tiles in the bathroom of our leased property.
Although it feels good to call it ‘simple’ or ‘fast’, I must admit that cleaning tile grout is rarely either. It is a task demanding time and effort. So, play your favorite tunes and practice patience; the results will be worthwhile!
Below is the account of my initial attempt at scrubbing tile grout – a piece penned several years past. I hope it assists those of you currently perplexed by this cleaning endeavor!

A Guide to Refreshing Shower and Floor Grout

For the very first time, our bathrooms boast modern finishes. Over the years, I’ve accumulated extensive experience with materials like barker board, linoleum, cedar beam ceilings, and plywood walls. However, I have never before had the opportunity to experiment with the current trendy options…
Specifically, tiles featuring grout and glass shower enclosures.

I felt immense excitement.
Nevertheless, I was completely clueless about how to maintain these chic new surfaces. Thus, seated in my living room, I turned to Google for answers. The volume of information was overwhelming. Countless articles outlined the ‘most straightforward’ methods for scrubbing tile grout. The more I perused, the more self-assured I felt. It seemed like it wouldn’t be difficult at all…
Therefore, I headed to the store to acquire the suggested items:

Essentials for Scrubbing Tile Grout
- baking soda
- hydrogen peroxide
- vinegar
- spray bottle
- sponge (avoid purchasing this!)
- grout brush– This is essential, friends. You absolutely need a tile grout brush!
- rubber gloves (which I already owned)
- window washing squeegee, or shower squeegee
I was eager to begin this venture and could hardly contain my joy at the thought of how immaculate the bathroom would look once the task was complete.
A detail that none of my guides mentioned was the ‘how’ of actually accessing the tiles in the shower. It was obvious from the outset that I needed to step inside the tub to reach the tile. I wasn’t eager to deal with slippery feet, so I folded a towel for footing and commenced the ‘effortless’ procedure:

Instructions for Refreshing Shower Grout
1. Apply the grout using a blend of equal parts vinegar and water. (So far, so good!)
Apply a paste composed of baking soda and hydrogen peroxide onto the grout.

Dab the grout brush into this paste, distribute it across the grout lines, and commence scrubbing. Remember that while this technique cleans the grout well, it might also spray onto your pants, hair, and the tub's base (!).

At this juncture, I realized that tidying grout serves as a rewarding alternative to gym attendance. It blends yoga stretching with an aerobic routine; maybe grout cleaning could become the next fitness trend?
By then, I was breathing heavily and completely content to proceed to the subsequent action.
3. Allow the paste to remain on the grout so it can break down the grime.
Since I couldn't recall the specifics from my reading, I waited approximately 30 minutes.
Following a delightful cup of coffee and a tasty lemon square treat, it was time for step 4.
4. Remove the paste.
One source suggested using a window washing squeegee for the easiest removal. I debated this extensively; how could I manage that without getting my feet wet??
Naturally, none of the guides covered such practical, everyday considerations…
Consequently, I found a dishpan, placed a dry washcloth inside, and stood within it. (Can you visualize this? It helps because I was too weary for more actual photographs.) This approach was highly effective. I positioned myself at the far side of the tub in my foot-saving dishpan, rinsed my window washing squeegee using the tub faucet, and then moved as needed. After washing and wiping with the squeegee, I moved on to the floor.

I was already quite fatigued by this point. Here is the precise sequence I employed.
- Pour a stream of hydrogen peroxide directly onto the grout.
- Scatter baking soda right onto the hydrogen peroxide.
- Allow it to rest for 30 minutes
- Scrub using the grout brush
- Rinse thoroughly with a cloth and water.
Fortunately, the effort yielded positive results; the grout is significantly cleaner.

There must be some knowledge I am overlooking!!
Contrary to the overly straightforward articles I encountered, I must state that grout cleaning is decidedly NOT simple.
Those elegant tiles possess remarkable beauty.
