Vintage textiles evoke warm recollections of my Grandma, Aunt, and mom crafting with crochet, embroidery, tatting, or knitting
I favor white and cream vintage linens for my table and dresser displays, which can be sourced from thrift stores, antique shops, garage sales, or platforms like etsy and e-bay
Occasionally, the charming vintage linens from the past might unfortunately carry a very unpleasant odor along with their nostalgia
This was my recent experience; I hesitated to wash the fragile fabric but the smell necessitated action, triggering a significant sneezing fit due to my allergies
I placed the items gently in the washing machine, adding laundry detergent and fabric softener, then selected the “delicate” wash cycle
Upon completion, I took them out individually and was delighted that no pieces were torn
My experience shows that ironing them while they are still wet, or at least damp, yields the best results

While ironing, I felt very successful, only to suddenly detect that awful smell once more
Oh, goodness
They returned to the washer
This time, I mixed a generous pour of vinegar with the detergent
And the outcome was
remarkably successful
I air-dried the damp linens outdoors (I suspect this aided the process), and the odor has completely vanished
Relief at last

What other methods do you suggest for eliminating fabric odors?
Update: Since writing this, I received two additional suggestions for linen deodorizing: using a product named “Biz” (availability locally is uncertain) or storing them in a container with newspapers (ensuring the paper does not touch the linen); apparently, the newspapers absorb the scent, which was surprising
