Week 2: Packing, Planning, and Practicing the New Living Room
Week two of packing to move has passed, and it feels like a constant string of decisions from every direction. We’re simultaneously decluttering—sorting, donating, and throwing away items that no longer serve us—and imagining how our furniture and belongings will live in the new house. When the process starts to feel overwhelming, it helps to step away for a cup of coffee or, as I discovered, to rearrange the living room for fun and clarity.
Isn’t that something most of us do when moving?
There was method to this mini-project. I sketched a “faux” floor plan of our new home entirely from memory and tried to think through furniture placement. It quickly became clear that guesses only get you so far without measurements, so I decided to build a mock version of the new living room inside our current living space. That hands-on exercise actually answered several practical questions and made the packing process more manageable.
This little experiment accomplished two main things:
- It created a fresh, calm space to retreat to when the rest of the house feels chaotic, and
- It helped me assemble and organize decor ideas that I want to carry into the new living room.
As we pack, I’m keeping the transition into the new place in mind. The plan is to pack the living room last and place all complementary items—throw pillows, artwork, lamps, candles, and small accessories—into a single box labeled “Living Room.” That way, at the new house we can quickly recreate a comfortable living area and avoid being surrounded by a jumble of boxes for too long.
And here’s a fun surprise: the new house has not one but two fireplace mantels to decorate. I did a quick Pinterest-style search for inspiration and practiced an arrangement on our dining room buffet to test scale and balance.
That small vignette went straight into the “Living Room decor” box so it can be set up quickly at the new place—then adjusted and fine-tuned once we’re settled. I expect to tinker with both mantels a few times before I’m completely happy, which is all part of the fun.
We’ve decided to save the living room for last while packing. Keeping one comfortable, usable room makes the whole move feel less chaotic: a place to sit, eat, and rest without being surrounded by stacked boxes. That practical consideration has been a sanity saver.
Thank you to everyone who shared moving tips with me. I loved the idea of using colored duct tape to mark boxes by room—it’s simple and highly visible. We tried it on our son’s room yesterday; he’s always been a duct-tape fan and already had a rainbow of colors ready to go. Color-coding boxes by destination and clearly labeling them with their contents will make unpacking faster and less stressful.
If you’re in the middle of a move too, a few practical reminders that have helped us: measure large furniture and doorways before you move it, consolidate matching decor into one labeled box for easier set-up, pack an essentials box with the items you’ll need first (chargers, basic kitchenware, a few toiletries), and protect fragile items with proper padding. These small steps reduce friction on moving day and make the first 24–48 hours in a new home much more comfortable.
Packing is part logistics, part creativity. Between purging and planning, taking a little time to play with layouts and vignettes helped calm the chaos and gave me a clearer vision for the new space. Onward to week three—more sorting, more boxes, and hopefully two beautifully styled mantels waiting for us at the other end.
