New Rental House Tour: Open Concept Living, Dining, and Kitchen
I’ve been meaning to share a house tour of our new rental, but it’s been a challenge to figure out how to present a home that’s still a work in progress. I didn’t take photos of the empty rooms before we moved in, and many of the unpacking boxes are still stacked and waiting to be sorted. That said, I wanted to give a honest, lived-in look at the spaces as they are now—partly unpacked, already loved, and slowly coming together.
We’re at the stage of unpacking, arranging, and rearranging as we learn what works. Some solutions happened quickly and have stayed put; others have already been modified. Settling into a new layout takes time, but it’s been fun discovering the practical details that make daily life easier here.
“something unexpected that brings
gladness and thanksgiving”
That definition of serendipity feels especially fitting for this house. Small, delightful features keep showing up: soft-close cupboard doors, well-placed storage cabinets, pretty blinds, and a comfortable flow between rooms. For us, this rental feels like a timely blessing and a genuinely pleasant new chapter.
Main Living Space: Living Room, Dining, and Kitchen
My favorite area is the open concept main living zone, which combines the living room, dining area, and kitchen. This bright, airy space sits at the top of the stairs from the entryway. Turn right at the landing and you step into the living room, which opens directly to the kitchen and dining area—perfect for casual family life and for entertaining.

The fireplace and mantel are a highlight; they create a cozy focal point and are a lot of fun to style. To make the move simpler, I packed a single “living room in a box” with all the key decor items for the space. That one box made it possible to have the living room feeling “presentable” by the end of the first day, even while the rest of the house remained a jumble of boxes. It’s a packing strategy I’d recommend to anyone moving into a new place.

The paint is a soft buttery yellow that reflects the natural light beautifully. The whole space benefits from lots of windows, so even on an ordinary day it feels warm and welcoming. From the couch by the window you can see straight into the kitchen and dining area—an arrangement that makes it easy to keep a conversation going whether you’re cooking, sitting at the counter, or relaxing on the sofa.
The Kitchen: Practical and Pleasant

There are many small features in the kitchen that I appreciate:
- Bar stool seating at the counter offers a casual, useful spot for meals and morning coffee.
- Generous counter space is inspiring—I already feel motivated to bake pies, cinnamon rolls, and other treats.
- The refrigerator with the freezer on the bottom is convenient and easy to access.
- The microwave has a built-in vent hood, which is a practical detail I haven’t had in past homes and now notice right away.
- All the lower cabinets are drawers, which makes storing and finding dishes and pans much simpler once everything is labeled and organized.
- There’s a tall, narrow door beside the fridge that hides a pantry—perfect for dry goods and overflow storage.
All these usable, well-thought-out elements make the kitchen feel efficient without being clinical. They support everyday cooking and entertaining while still feeling homey.
Dining Area and Furniture Fit

The dining area is a bit smaller than the formal dining room we had previously, but it’s perfectly functional and very friendly to everyday life. Everything in the combined living, dining, and kitchen area is nearby and easy to reach, which simplifies hosting and daily routines. We managed to fit a buffet along one wall—there was some concern it would be too large, but it fits just right and provides useful storage and surface space for serving.

Overall, this main living space feels practical, comfortable, and inviting. It’s ideal for the kind of everyday living we do—cooking together, casual dining, lounging with a book by the window, and arranging the mantel seasonally.

Thanks for stopping by this partial tour. I’ll continue to share updates as the boxes are unpacked and the rooms evolve. For now, I’m enjoying the discovery process and the small conveniences that make this new rental feel like home.
Have a great week!
