Planning a trip to Vancouver Island, BC? Here’s a local’s insider guide to the best places to visit on Vancouver Island, from hidden beaches and scenic walks to charming towns and top-notch spas. It also covers what to wear and the best time to come!

First, a Bit About Me
I’m “Grandma Rita,” and I’ve lived on Vancouver Island for the past 34 years. I grew up on a farm on the Montana prairie, surrounded by big blue skies and wide fields. I still have to pinch myself when I see both the ocean and the mountains!
Vancouver Island is a treasure trove of natural beauty, ringed by smaller islands that you can reach by boat or ferry. We actually lived on one of those small islands for 24 years. Now we’re on the larger Vancouver Island, and over the past 10 years we’ve made a point of exploring more of our own “backyard.” There’s a breathtaking view or cozy hidden gem around every corner!
Vancouver Island Is NOT Vancouver, BC! (Alaska Cruise Tip)
I get asked this a lot, especially by cruise travelers headed to Alaska. If you’re sailing on an Alaska cruise from Vancouver, BC, please know that Vancouver Island is a separate island and not the same place as the city of Vancouver.
To get here from the city of Vancouver, you’ll need a ferry ride of about 1½ to 2 hours each way. If you don’t plan extra time before or after your cruise, you won’t be able to visit Vancouver Island and still make it back to your ship on time. But if you do build in extra days, it’s absolutely worth the trip!
When’s the Best Time to Visit Vancouver Island?
July and August usually bring the most sunshine and blue skies. That’s when you’ll find the warmest weather, perfect for beach days and outdoor adventures.
That said, the weather stays fairly mild all year. Winters are wet and gray, with the occasional snowfall that usually melts quickly. Temperatures rarely drop too low, but the damp sea breeze can feel chilly to the bone, especially in winter, so plan accordingly!
What to Pack: West Coast Casual
Locals don’t usually carry umbrellas, but we all own a good raincoat and waterproof shoes. My go-to walking shoes (in all but flip-flop weather!) are the sturdy pull-on leather boots you’ll see on MANY feet around here. (Affiliate link.)
In the summer, pack:
- Shorts, skirts, and capris
- T-shirts and light sweaters
- A swimsuit (yes, we go swimming! Keep in mind the ocean is VERY cold here, so I personally prefer lake swimming.)
- Flip-flops or comfortable sandals, or hiking boots or running shoes if you’re a serious hiker
- Light rain jacket
Year-round must-haves:
- Layers (think jeans, t-shirts, and sweaters or hoodies). You can shed them if you get too warm!
- A warm jacket that’s at least water-resistant if you’re visiting in fall, winter, or spring
- Comfortable walking shoes
Dress is quite casual around here. I like to call it “West Coast Casual.” We’re not big on dressing up, so comfy and practical is the way to go!
Local Favorites: My Personal Recommendations
These are places I’ve personally visited and loved. There are so many more to discover, but this is a great starting point for real local insight!
1. Victoria, BC
Butchart Gardens is an absolute must-see! The gardens are world-class and beautifully kept, and the Saturday night summer fireworks are magical. The Christmas displays are stunning in winter, too. The whole place runs like clockwork, even with tour buses and big crowds.
Other favorites in Victoria:
- A local tea and coffee shop
- A leisurely drive along Dallas Road for jaw-dropping ocean views
- Fisherman’s Wharf (don’t miss the colorful float homes!)
- Stroll through the Empress Hotel, which also has restaurants, shops, and afternoon tea!
- Admire the Parliament Buildings lit up at night
- Take a walk on the David Foster Walkway
- We have always enjoyed our stay at a hotel on the Inner Harbour (it’s right across from the Blue Ball Ferry Terminal to Anacortes, Washington!)

14. Guided Boat Tours and Whale Watching
We’ve never taken a professional guided boat tour or whale watching excursion, though many are offered. Here’s what I pack for a day boat trip.
Where to Eat on Vancouver Island
You’ll find plenty of familiar fast food and chain restaurants across Vancouver Island, including:
- Several well-known burger and ice cream chains
- A popular BC chain for burgers and comfort food
- A beloved Canadian coffee, donut, and sandwich shop
- A few well-known pizza chains
- Two more sit-down restaurant chains
But one of the best parts of exploring the Island is trying the local gems! Charming family-owned cafés, seafood spots, and farm-to-table restaurants are tucked into every corner, from cozy brunch places to ocean-view patios.
Tip from a Local: For the best local eats, search the specific area you’re visiting, like “best coffee shops in Courtenay” or “top seafood restaurants in Tofino.” The options are endless and always changing, so you’re sure to discover something delicious and unique wherever you go!
