Create a Rustic Message Board like Pottery Barn's at a Lower Cost
In the past, I frequently browsed Pottery Barn for home styling inspiration, though purchasing their items was out of reach; this sparked ideas for DIY projects using affordable or existing supplies.
The concept for this Pottery Barn message board arose while preparing for a Christmas craft fair where my husband and I sold handcrafted decor.
This entry detailed some of the merchandise we sold previously, none of which found a place in our own home, as they sold out quickly!!
Review the original post, which now includes additional details I trust will be beneficial!

While preparing for a craft fair, I searched for creative uses for reclaimed wood, and this image captured my attention:

A message board! I admired it greatly; {it was listed for as much as $150.}
I adapted this concept using materials I already possessed; here is the process.
Supplies for a Pottery Barn Inspired Message Board
- Plywood
- Cream canvas or a painter’s drop cloth
- Burlap
- Staple gun and staples
- Jute
- Upholstery or carpet tacks
- Iron on transfer vintage postcards (if desired)
- Staz-on Ink and rubber stamps (optional)
- Sewing machine and thread (for pockets and ruffles)
- Wooden strips for the frame.
Simple Steps for a Pottery Barn Style Message Board
I covered the plywood with a painter’s drop cloth and secured it to the back with staples.
Jute knotted and affixed with upholstery or carpet tacks served as the attachment lines for notes.
The French postcard designs were sourced from the Graphics Fairy blog and transferred onto the items using iron on transfers. {You can view the images here.}
I crafted small envelopes for correspondence, then used Staz-on ink, which is permanent, along with acrylic stamps for decoration. {These pieces are from Close to my Heart.}
Once everything was complete, my spouse secured a frame stained in Dark Walnut around the perimeter.
The piece located on the lower left utilizes a burlap coffee bean sack; I am uncertain whether to include a paper clip or present it purely as a piece of art.
