This DIY ornament mimicking a chalkboard has a clever secret: it isn't truly a chalkboard!
For this chalkboard ornament guide, you might need to retrieve some power tools that have been stored away for a while.

This straightforward wooden creation utilizes 1/4 inch baltic birch plywood, which was shaped using a scroll saw. My husband handles the cutting, and I manage the painting. (If learning the scroll saw appeals to you, I located a helpful tutorial.)
The design is a 4 inch circle topped with a small rectangle, resembling an ornament. I drafted the shape on cardboard from a cereal box, then transferred the outline to the wood to create many ornaments quickly.
Chalkboard Style Ornament Crafting Guide:
- After cutting the shapes, apply a base layer of black acrylic paint to the main circle's sides, front, and back.

2. After the black coating is entirely dry, color the ornament's top section (sides, front, and back) with metallic gold acrylic paint.
3. Employ white graphite paper and a font design from your preference to trace the word “Joy” onto the ornament's front. (A video guide for this step is available here.)

4. Color the word “joy” using white acrylic paint. (This tutorial demonstrates my letter painting technique.)
5. Once the lettering is dry, introduce polka dots by lightly pressing a paintbrush dipped in gold paint onto the ornament.

6. To complete the ornament, bore a small opening at the top and attach baker’s twine or string for hanging.

Even though I painted these to look like chalkboards, you can easily convert them to genuine chalkboard ornaments by using chalkboard paint (which is available in various hues) and actual chalk.
Enjoy your painting!
By the way, I am opting for a black and white theme on my tree this season. What colors are you planning for yours?
