Simple Bird Ornament Creation with Fabric

A quick note before starting: I captured photos during the process without meticulously staging them. This shows the genuine, real-life crafting experience, including the inevitable mess! You'll see my ironing board served as my primary workspace :)

Materials Required:

  • A cardboard outline of a basic bird silhouette (any desired dimension)
  • Sturdy textile material
  • Iron-on heat n bond
  • Tracing pen
  • Sewing Machine
  • Hanging string

Instructions presented step by step

1. Employ the cardboard template to transfer the bird design onto the reverse side of the thick damask fabric.

Since I wanted many, I traced several designs.

2. Carefully cut out all the bird shapes utilizing fabric scissors.

3. On a separate piece of damask fabric, apply heat n bond to the underside of the textile. This heat n bond stiffens the fabric. (Iron-on interfacing is also a suitable alternative.)

4. After ironing, gently remove the paper backing once the adhesive has set onto the fabric.

4. Lay a sheet of 'warm and natural' batting over the adhesive, then position the cut-out birds atop the batting.

The final layers are arranged as follows: {First layer: Damask with heat and bond. Second layer: Soft batting. Third layer: Bird cut-outs.}

5. Secure the birds in place by pinning them through all the layers. Roughly trim around the pieces, leaving some space near the edges for easy maneuvering under your sewing machine.

6. Sew a topstitch approximately 1/2 inch from the perimeter. {I rely on the sewing machine foot for guidance.} Insert a loop of string into the top center of the bird and stitch it securely to allow hanging on the tree.

7. After completing the edge stitching, trim the bottom two layers to precisely match the outline of the top bird.

8. Decorate the birds by using a hot glue gun to affix burlap wings, rick rack trip fabric flowers, and buttons.

I utilized burlap for the 'wings.' The tail feathers consist of a canvas strip that was torn and ironed like an accordion. I simply glued them with a hot glue gun and gently 'fluffed' them until satisfied. These would also look lovely with miniature tattered flowers and ruffles!
