Learn how to make DIY Scandinavian Christmas tree ornaments from fabric and letter stamps.
I love Christmas décor inspired by Scandinavian hygge: “simple, cozy, and relaxed.”
Much Scandinavian style décor is mostly white and neutral. I adore that look, but sometimes I enjoy a little splash of color.
Since I had leftover fabric from our flannel pillow covers, I decided to turn some of it into simple DIY Christmas ornaments.

Making Scandinavian Christmas Tree Ornaments

Here’s what you’ll need for these fabric ornaments:

- fabric
- sewing machine
- Heat n Bond hem tape
- twig
- iron
- baker’s twine, ribbon, or jute to hang them
- letter stamps (here’s another option for letter stamps)
- permanent stamp ink
- cotton batting or paper strips for stuffing
Step 1: Make a paper tree pattern in the size you want. Cut 2 fabric pieces for each Christmas tree ornament.
To make a simple paper tree pattern, decide how wide and tall you want the tree to be. Cut a rectangle that size, then fold it in half. Cut diagonally from the bottom corner at the open end up to the top to form a triangle. Unfold it and you have a tree! My ornament is 4 inches wide at the bottom and 5 inches tall.

Step 2: Cut the baker’s twine or ribbon to 12 inches. Tie a knot at one end and place it just below the tip of the tree (on the back of one tree).

Step 3: Sew up both sides of the tree using a 1/2 inch seam, making sure the twine hanger is caught between the layers.
Step 4: Tear a plain cotton fabric strip 3/4 inch wide and fray the edges. Iron a piece of Heat n Bond tape onto the back.

Step 5: Stamp any word you like onto the strip with letter stamps and permanent ink. Once it’s stamped, peel off the Heat n Bond backing and iron the strip onto the front of the ornament.

Step 6: Lightly stuff the tree with batting (or shredded paper from the shred bin, like I did!). Set the twig “trunk” in the center of the bottom and mark its spot. Sew up the bottom, stopping where the trunk goes. Then hot glue the twig in place.

These ornaments look lovely on the tree whether you go with a real or artificial Christmas tree!
Or stamp people’s names on them and use them as creative gift tags!
