Approaching Mothers Day
With social media shares and television promotions highlighting the observance, my thoughts frequently turn to my mother.
This holiday evokes mixed emotions for me.
When I was young, I could not grasp why anyone would feel sorrow on a celebration; to me, it was simply dinners, presents, and joyful festivities, prompting me to wonder about the sadness.
I understand now.
As the yearly turns of my personal calendar progressed, the genuine challenges of existence also arrived.
Bereavement.
Grief.
Transformation.
Occasionally, holidays resurface memories long dormant.
This is a positive aspect.
I hold numerous joyful recollections involving my mom.
However, it is also a source of sorrow.
I grieve the diminishment brought by dementia.
I deeply miss the mother I once knew.
My affection for her remains immense…

Today, while ascending the hill, a light drizzle began. Following numerous days of bright sun and warmth, the rain feels unexpectedly striking; it made me consider that without rain, the sunshine would not be as valued.
This parallel struck me regarding my experience with my mom.
It is the cherished, beautiful memories I shared with her that cause my sorrow during this quiet time with dementia; many individuals mourn lacking such treasured childhood moments.
I mourn...
because I possessed them.
I resolve today to feel thankful for that.

To conclude this piece on a brighter note, I have a funny video to share with you all...
Wishing everyone a joyful Mothers Day; I am delighted that my three sons are here to celebrate this occasion with me. Additionally, I look forward to acquiring new patio chairs (a purchase prompted by their suggestion).
For anyone who experiences this holiday with mixed or somber feelings, please accept a very warm embrace from me!
