Packed with flavor and good nutrition, these homemade turkey burgers are seriously delicious. Grill them to perfection in under 15 minutes.
Have I mentioned lately that my husband and I are empty nesters?
We are.
It’s a whole new stage of life, and we’re loving it.
Like every stage of life, it comes with adjustments and changes, and we’ve been making a conscious effort to eat healthier.
Over the last few weeks, we’ve been hunting for new dinner ideas that are full of flavor and healthy goodness, and that have fewer calories.
We tried these turkey burgers as an experiment and just LOVED them.
I pulled together a bunch of ideas, so this recipe is my own creation, just for you!

How to make Homemade Turkey Burgers
Ingredients for this recipe:

- 1 pound ground turkey
- 1 medium onion, diced
- 1 cup cauliflower rice (I made my own using this roasted cauliflower rice recipe, minus the lemon)
- 2 cups mushrooms, finely diced
- 1/4 cup plain Greek yogurt
- salt and pepper to taste
How to make the turkey burger patties

Step 1: Combine all the ingredients in a large mixing bowl. Use a large spoon or clean hands to mix everything well.
Step 2: Scoop out 1/2 cup of the turkey mixture, shape it into a ball, then flatten it into a patty. Press a small dent into the center, since the patties tend to puff up in the middle as they cook.

Step 3: Arrange the patties on a parchment-lined baking sheet and freeze them if you plan to cook them later. Once they’re frozen individually, transfer them to a ziploc bag.
How to cook turkey burgers on the grill
Take out as many patties as you’d like to cook from the freezer.
Thaw them on a plate in the refrigerator.
Preheat your grill to medium-high, about 425 degrees. Like a cast iron pan, the grates should be nice and hot so the burgers don’t stick.

Lightly oil the grates before adding the burgers by holding a generously oiled paper towel with tongs.

Set the prepared patties on the hot grill and let them cook on one side for about 5 minutes.

Next, slide a large barbecue flipper quickly under each burger and flip it over.

That initial cooking time lets the burger release, so it won’t stick to the grates.

Keep cooking, about 5 minutes per side, until the internal temperature reaches 165 degrees Fahrenheit.
How to cook turkey burgers in the oven
If it’s too cold to barbecue outside right now, you can cook them in the oven instead.
Follow these steps to make turkey burgers in the oven:
- Preheat the oven to 425 degrees.
- Set a cooling rack inside a pan with sides, such as a jelly roll pan.
- Arrange the turkey burgers on the cooling rack so juices can drip away and hot air can circulate around them. Bake for 15 minutes, or until the internal temperature reaches about 155 degrees. There’s no need to flip them with this method.
- Take the burgers out of the oven, tent them with foil, and let them rest for 5 minutes. They’ll keep cooking slightly as they sit.
What do you put on a homemade grilled turkey burger?

Pile your grilled turkey burgers onto a bun, just as you would with beef burgers. Here are some of our favorite toppings:
- grilled mushrooms
- diced onion
- sliced tomatoes
- lettuce
- cheese
- ketchup & mustard
- mayonnaise + red hot sauce
For a lower-calorie option, skip the bun and serve the grilled burger with a side salad and oven-roasted veggies, or even grilled cauliflower (yum!).
There are options galore!
Turkey burgers are also delicious with classic burger sides, such as:
- Classic Potato Salad
- Cold Pasta Salad
- Potato Chips
- Sweet potato fries (or roasted sweet potatoes)
- French Fries
