Summer Work Wardrobe: Comfortable, Cool, and With Sleeves

This year has been full of transitions. With new jobs and a new home, I also needed to refresh my wardrobe. I now work two days a week at a local jewelry store, and my usual summer-camp clothes didn’t quite suit the shop. I set out to build a small summer work wardrobe that could be mixed and matched, be comfortable for long shifts, and look put-together for interacting with customers.

To keep the search focused I gave every potential item three simple requirements:

  1. Be comfortable
  2. Be cool enough for summer
  3. Have sleeves — preferably pretty, flattering sleeves

Finding the right shoes was the first priority. With small feet (about a 5–5½), it can be tricky to find a pair that fits and feels good all day. After trying several local options, I finally found a pair that met my needs: a comfortable, supportive style from FLY by London. They were an investment, but after wearing them for months they still feel cushioned and supportive, like walking on clouds.

Once the shoes were decided, I focused on tops and bottoms. I naturally gravitated toward a navy-and-white palette, which made it easy to mix and match pieces for multiple looks. Neutral separates create more outfit possibilities with fewer items, and navy is a great summer alternative to black that still looks sharp in a retail setting.

Highlights of what I ended up with:

  • Linen capris from Old Navy paired with a tunic from Winners (Brody Miles) for an airy, polished look.
  • Navy capris (Denver Hayes) that are extremely comfortable, and an Alfred Sung top that’s ideal for cooler mornings or air-conditioned environments (found at a local uniform/store chain).
  • A navy skirt and coordinating Alfred Sung blouse for a slightly dressier option that still feels comfortable.

I intentionally chose pieces that coordinate, so a handful of tops and bottoms can create several outfits. To broaden the wardrobe further I added a pair of white capris that pair well with all the tops. A brightly colored top—red or pink, for example—would also inject a fresh pop of color into the navy-and-white base and expand outfit combinations even more.

Practical tips from my search that may help you build your own summer work wardrobe:

  • Start with a neutral color palette so items mix and match easily; navy and white are classic and professional for summer.
  • Prioritize breathable fabrics like linen or cotton blends for warm days, and choose tops with sleeves if your workplace prefers a more polished look.
  • Invest in one pair of high-quality, comfortable shoes you can wear all day — comfort pays off when you’re on your feet selling or helping customers.
  • Look for versatile pieces that transition between casual and slightly dressier depending on how you accessorize.

I enjoy how these pieces work together to create a capsule wardrobe that feels fresh and practical. The mix-and-match approach gives the impression of more outfits than I actually own, which is perfect when time and closet space are limited. I’ll continue to add a few colorful tops to expand the options, but for now this compact collection covers my needs for store shifts and keeps me comfortable throughout the day.
