After three decades of managing a household, one thing remains constant: families need to eat every day. Meal planning and grocery shopping can feel like a constant chore, so I developed a simple system to make both faster and less stressful.

Today I’m sharing my printable grocery lists and meal planning templates — the exact layout I’ve used for years, now available as a ready-to-print set. These pages will help you plan menus, build efficient shopping lists, and even keep track of freezer meals.

How to Use the Free Printable Grocery List + Meal Planner

What’s included in the printable set

The bundle contains five printable pages designed to streamline your meal planning and shopping routine:

  • a master printable grocery list
  • a printable grocery list organized by shopping categories
  • a weekly meal planner
  • a monthly meal planner
  • a freezer meal inventory sheet

These printables are intended to be flexible: use the weekly planner if you prefer shorter planning cycles, or the monthly planner to reduce trips to the store and save time. The category-based grocery list is laid out to match a typical store flow, but a blank version is included so you can customize it to your store’s layout.

Start with the meal plan

Use printable menu plans first before you use your free printable grocery list templates.

The easiest approach is to plan your meals first, then build a grocery list from that plan. Planning by the month worked well for us when we lived in a rural area because it reduced trips and cut costs. Now, with a smaller household and limited pantry space, I switch between weekly and monthly planning depending on needs.

Choose the planner that fits your lifestyle: monthly for bulk planning and fewer store runs, weekly for flexibility and fresher ingredients. Once meals are scheduled, transfer needed ingredients to the shopping list so you don’t forget anything.

Plan with freezer meals in mind

Making and storing freezer meals is one of the best ways to save time on busy days. The printables include a freezer meal log so you can record what’s stored, the date it was packed, and where it’s located. Categorizing freezer meals makes it easy to rotate what you have on hand.

Typical freezer-friendly options include soups and slow-cooker meals, casseroles and one-pan bakes, and simple Mexican or pasta dishes. When batch-cooking, I usually make several meals at once so there’s a steady supply ready to go.

Soup and slow-cooker ideas

  • Taco-style soups
  • White chicken chili
  • Sausage and tortellini soup (freeze without pasta, add pasta when reheating)
  • Sweet-and-sour sausage dishes
  • Creamy vegetable soups (freeze before adding cream)

Casseroles and one-pan meals

  • Chicken bakes and tortillas casseroles
  • Lasagna
  • Meatloaf or similar bake-and-serve dishes

Mexican and pasta favorites

  • Beef or chicken burritos
  • Chicken chimichangas or enchilada-style dishes

Tip: label each container with the meal name and date so you can use older meals first and avoid freezer waste.

Organizing your grocery list to match your store’s layout can save time and make errands quicker.

Take stock of your pantry and refrigerator

Before you write your shopping list, check your pantry, fridge, and freezer. Cross off items you already have and note quantities so you avoid duplicate purchases. Using the category-based list while you check shelves will speed this process and help prevent forgotten staples.

If you shop with a partner, try the two-cart method: split the list and start at opposite ends of the store to cut shopping time in half. Small changes like this add up and make weekly errands much less stressful.

Free home organization help

If you’d like additional support, I offer a free Home Organization mini-series designed around 15-minute daily tasks. It includes short, actionable steps for common areas like kitchen cupboards, the pantry, and small closets, plus printable checklists to keep you on track.
