Creating Unique Antique Window Wall Decor

Handcrafted home accents possess a distinct charm; creating something personally often reduces expenses while allowing complete personalization. I particularly admire aged, antique windows and frequently integrate them into our home styling, such as transforming a large one into a message board in our kitchen.

This particular piece graced our Fall Entryway and featured a chalkboard surface on one side.

I designed another one with young girls in mind; though, altering the color palette and text could make it suitable for anyone.}

Are you interested in crafting one yourself?

Here is a list of necessary materials:

DSC_8818

  • an antique window
  • an mdf wood piece sized to fit the window. {This material is wonderful for painting; it is only about 1/4 inch thick, and the lumberyard employee mentioned many artists purchase it. I understand why; an 8 x 4 foot sheet is only $11 and accepts paint beautifully!}
  • cardboard pieces with dimension (sourced from scrapbooking suppliers, specifically Stampin’ Up)
  • foam brushes
  • acrylic paint in any preferred colors
  • {not shown} modge podge

Regrettably, I lack any 'in progress' photographs this time, but visualization should be straightforward:

1. Apply your chosen color to the board's background.

2. Color the cardboard dimensional pieces using colors of your choice.

3. Secure the background board to the back of the window.

4. Adhere the dimensional elements using modge podge.

Success! You have completed the project!!

Optional: You can enhance the dimensional elements with some hand-painted line details.

I lightly sand the existing window finish (outdoors, due to potential lead paint), then apply a subtle acrylic 'wash,' preferring to let the original patina remain visible as it contributes to the antique appeal.
