Classic Banana Pudding Pie Homemade Recipe

Jump to the recipe

A traditional banana cream pie recipe features homemade cooked pudding generously topping fresh bananas, evoking warm memories of Grandma's baking.

This homemade banana pudding pie, made completely from scratch, is a timeless favorite, much like the chocolate cream pie.

You can use a store-bought pie crust or a crust made from scratch; simply layer fresh banana slices beneath the homemade cooked pudding. Alternatives to the standard pie crust include a graham cracker crust or a nilla wafer crust.

After baking the crust, cover a layer of fresh banana slices with the homemade vanilla pudding. Allow it to chill and set before topping the banana pudding pie with whipped cream or cool whip.

For a faster preparation, canned whipped cream serves as a simple substitute for homemade whipped cream.

This classic recipe carries the nostalgic quality of the old fashioned style, just as my Mom and Grandma prepared it!

Ingredients for banana cream pie with pudding.

The necessary components include:

Please consult the printable recipe card below for precise quantities.

  • Baked pie shell
  • Sugar
  • Cornstarch
  • Salt
  • Whole milk
  • Egg yolks
  • Salted butter
  • Vanilla
  • Bananas
  • Heavy cream (for whipping cream for serving)

Initial Step: Prepare the vanilla cream pie filling

  • Combine sugar, cornstach, and salt in a medium saucepan.
  • Slowly incorporate the milk while whisking.
  • Cook over medium heat, stirring continuously, until the mixture thickens and begins to boil.
  • Maintain a boil for 2 minutes, ensuring constant stirring to avoid sticking to the pan.
  • Remove from the heat and gently whisk half of the hot mixture into the egg yolks. Then, blend this tempered mixture back into the remaining hot pudding within the saucepan.
  • Simmer the mixture on the stove for another minute and a half while stirring continuously.
  • Take the pan off the heat and mix in the butter and vanilla. Let it rest until it reaches room temperature.

Step 2: Cut three large bananas and arrange them inside the baked pie crust.

Spread the vanilla cream pudding over the sliced bananas.

Step 3: Gently pour the cooled vanilla cream filling on top of the bananas.

Be aware that the hot mixture will start to form a surface layer as it cools. To maintain a smooth texture, whisk the pudding every five minutes during the cooling process.

Use plastic wrap to cover the pie filling while it cools to stop a layer from developing on top.

Step 4: Place plastic wrap directly onto the vanilla cream filling to avoid a skin forming while it cools.

Refrigerate the pie completely – for a minimum of four hours – before slicing.

Step 5: Plate with freshly whipped cream and decorate with banana slices.

Here is how to prepare whipped cream:

  • Measure one cup of heavy cream into the bowl of a stand mixer.
  • Using the whisk beater, whisk on high speed until stiff peaks develop.
  • Mix in two tablespoons of sugar and half a teaspoon of vanilla until fully combined.

Whipped cream suggestion: It is useful to chill the bowl and whisk beforehand.

This recipe makes eight portions from a nine-inch dish.

Alternative versions of this Banana Cream Pudding Pie:

  • Enhance with extra toppings like toasted coconut or chocolate curls.
  • Add more banana by placing a layer at the bottom, then half the pudding, then more bananas, and finish with the remaining pudding.
  • For a faster method, substitute with instant vanilla pudding mix or the pudding layer.
  • Swap the baked pie crust for a graham cracker base or layers of vanilla wafers.

Common questions about homemade banana cream pie:

“How can I keep bananas in banana cream pie from turning brown?” – If you aren’t going to serve this pie soon after you make it, you may want to toss the sliced bananas in 1 Tbl. citrus juice (like lemon juice). It won’t affect the flavor, and will prevent the bananas from turning brown. “How can I get my pie filling to be thick enough?” – This recipe uses cornstarch as the thickening agent. That, along with a long enough cooking time should prevent your pie from being runny. “How should I store leftovers?”- To store leftover pudding pie, cover with plastic wrap or place in an airtight container and place in the refrigerator.

Old Fashioned Banana Cream Pie from Scratch

Banana Cream Pie is a beloved dessert from earlier times made with basic ingredients. The creamy pudding filling poured over sliced bananas delivers a flavor that remains a true favorite!

Ingredients

Method

  1. To begin the vanilla cream pie filling, blend sugar, cornstarch and salt inside a medium saucepan.
  2. Slowly incorporate milk into the dry ingredients while whisking continuously.
  3. Apply medium heat and stir consistently until the blend becomes thicker and reaches a boil.
  4. Allow the mixture to boil for precisely two minutes, maintaining constant agitation to avoid burning.
  5. Take the pan off the flame and fold half of the hot blend into beaten egg yolks, then return the mixture to the saucepan.
  6. Place back on the burner and boil 1 and 1/2 minutes more, stirring constantly.
  7. Take the pan off the heat and mix in butter and vanilla extract. Allow the mixture to rest and reach room temperature.
  8. Cut three substantial bananas and arrange them inside a prepared crust. Pour the cooled custard over the fruit. Note that the pudding may form a surface film as it cools; to maintain a silky texture, stir the mixture every five minutes during the cooling process. (I refrigerated my filling for fifteen minutes before adding it over the bananas.)
  9. Seal the vanilla cream pie with plastic wrap to stop a skin from developing. Refrigerate the dessert completely—minimum four hours—before serving slices.
