This simple hot fudge sauce achieves a rich, creamy consistency using chocolate chips and evaporated milk, surpassing store-bought quality! It cooks quickly on the stovetop.
I also incorporate this sauce when preparing the wonderful oreo ice cream cake recipe.

Recalling my mother making this for the first time, I thought it was the ultimate hot fudge sauce as a child, and my kids enjoy it too.
Reasons to Enjoy This Recipe
This preparation can be made ahead and kept in the refrigerator within a sealed container until needed.
This straightforward recipe yields a luxurious creamy texture, slightly denser than most commercial chocolate fudge sauces. Warming it slightly makes it ideal for ice cream or any dessert requiring hot fudge or chocolate sauce.
Instead of employing cocoa powder and heavy cream, this simple recipe utilizes just chocolate chips and evaporated milk.
Now that it's just the two of us empty nesters, we take a couple tablespoons, warm it for 10 seconds in a microwave-safe dish, and it's perfect for our evening frozen yogurt. It's delicious, and we don't need to warm the entire jar each time!

Necessary Ingredients
(A printable recipe card is available below for ease of use.)
- Chocolate chips
- Butter
- Evaporated milk
- Powdered sugar
- Vanilla
Directions for Homemade Hot Fudge Sauce
Begin by melting the chocolate chips and butter together in a small heavy saucepan, stirring continuously until smooth and shiny. After melting, incorporate the warmed evaporated milk and powdered sugar, continuing to stir until combined.
Next, bring it to a boil, then maintain the boil for roughly 8 minutes, stirring throughout. I prefer a figure-8 whisking motion, learned from a cooking show, as it prevents sticking to the pan bottom. After 8 minutes, remove from heat and stir in the vanilla—that's all! You will have thick, glossy, homemade hot fudge sauce ready for your favorite ice cream.

Helpful Tips and Suggestions
- Observing a cooking show, I learned that stirring in a figure 8 pattern during boiling helps stop sticking; this technique worked wonderfully with this recipe!
- Keep leftovers of this thick chocolate sauce in an airtight container in the refrigerator. Reheat only the needed portion in a microwave-safe container.
Keeping Homemade Chocolate Fudge Sauce
Transfer the hot fudge sauce to a covered container and refrigerate until required. A mason jar is excellent for this. Scoop out the desired amount and gently warm it in the microwave to achieve a pourable consistency.

Ways to use this Hot Fudge Sauce
I think this yummy sauce makes the best ice cream sundae. Just pour it over a bowl of vanilla ice cream.
You can finish it off like the ice cream shops do and add whipped cream and top with a maraschino cherry.
You could also use this sauce on ice cream alongside strawberry sauce and caramel sauce. The flavors work together very well!
You could also use it to make a lovely brownie sundae dessert by adding a scoop of ice cream to a chocolate brownie and drizzling hot fudge sauce over it all.
Equipment
For this recipe, I just used my favorite saucepan, whisk, and a microwavable glass measuring cup.
