Transforming the Basement Family Area

Recently, I resolved to openly share the state of my basement space with my dear Bildirimlerim readers; it had been a private spot I hadn't yet unveiled.

Transforming the Basement Family Area

I recently chose to embrace a bold step and invite you to explore the lower level of my home. For some time, this particular zone remained a secret I kept from my online circle. However, it felt inappropriate to keep such a lovely space concealed.

My journey began gradually with a glimpse of the laundry zone, which, come January, transformed into a creative workshop.

Prepare yourselves! The moment has arrived to address another section.

Half of the residence, including a portion of the lower level, dates back to 1926. I frequently speculate about the architectural and interior design trends of that era. Rather than delving into extensive research, I opted to play detective within our own walls. These are my notes, reflecting the present condition of the original 1926 segment of the lower level:

1. In all likelihood, lower levels were once called "cellars." If that was the case, I am grateful this one features a concrete slab rather than packed earth! That said, the concrete possesses a peculiar composition. Rather than a polished surface, it is riddled with minute cavities and sharp rocks that rise to the surface. Traversing this barefoot feels akin to an intense fitness regimen...

2. The presence of peculiar troughs and oversized drainage openings suggests that flooding was once a certainty.

3. Given that the lower level was not originally designed for habitation, it likely seemed perfectly reasonable to pour a circular concrete pedestal in the center of the floor to support the coal-burning heater...

4. The windows were indeed a true luxury back then, and I remain convinced of that sentiment today! I find them equally precious in the current day.

{Indeed, it is a dreary, wet day at the moment. And the windows are exceptionally grimy…}

5. Perhaps individuals were of smaller stature in the past? The ceiling elevation barely exceeds six feet. Anyone exceeding that height must quickly duck when nearing a support beam... {Let me assure you, there are certain perks to standing five feet two inches tall!}

Upon moving into this property, the lower level was cluttered with various storage units. While functional, I genuinely desired to utilize the area for more than mere storage. It felt like such a misapplication of "prime real estate" (humor intended!)

After wiping away tears shed over its initial dreadful condition, I envisioned creating a "family room" area for our sons. My drive intensified significantly with the arrival of the WII gaming system, a gift from their grandparents. We initially attempted to set it up on the upper floor... Yikes! As they bowled, boxed, raftered rivers, and navigated virtual terrain, I felt the structure might collapse atop me...

Thus commenced the "Family Room" undertaking. It proved to be far more complex than simply "laying down a rug, placing a sofa and television..."

This depicts the state of affairs upon our arrival...{Sadly, this is the sole pre-renovation image I possess...}

Return tomorrow, and I will reveal its current appearance.

...and brace yourself...The transformation is not yet complete!:)

And how I genuinely felt about that Lower Level upon our departure from that dwelling!
