Stretch your bedroom renovation budget further with this clever decorating tip – apply paint like a professional! Achieve a striking new appearance for minimal expense.

It’s the fourth week of the One Room Challenge. Organized by Calling it Home and Better Homes and Gardens, this initiative invites participants to finish a room transformation in eight weeks. We’ve decided to tackle our Master Bedroom. Our design direction is inspired by "Modern Farmhouse Boho" and last week we kicked off the makeover by tackling our compact closet organization.

Today’s before and after showcase highlights one of the most significant transformations to the bedroom – applying paint to an accent wall!

Master Bedroom Styling: Paint Walls Using Two-Tone Combinations

Our room formerly sported the more coastal shades of Simply White and Silver Strand.

While it was a significant upgrade over the boring builder beige they started with, we were prepared for a change.

Wall Painting on a Financial Plan

As we noted at the start of this series, our goal is to complete this room makeover using mostly supplies we already possess. This choice was influenced by several factors, such as:

  • reducing expenses,
  • utilizing items occupying room in our compact home, and
  • prompting us to be more inventive with DIY tasks!

Keeping this in mind, we decided our dark painted accent wall should be coated in Iron Mountain by Benjamin Moore. We had a leftover portion of a can from earlier projects, and we already appreciated how this shade looked with Simply White.

(Here are my top suggestions on selecting paint shades you’ll adore.)

Nonetheless, we recognized that the paint volume we had on hand might be insufficient for two layers. Therefore, to guarantee a superb finish, we outlined and applied the first layer with a leftover sample of Burnt Umber paint (which had been applied to the headboard previously). We were stunned that the sample tin nearly covered an entire first layer on the wall!

After it set, we applied the final layer of Iron Mountain to the wall. It covered flawlessly and we adore the result!

We maintained the other three walls in Simply White, as we adore the brightness it introduces to the area.

Guidelines for painting a dark accent wall

If you are new to room painting, I’ve compiled all my advice and techniques in this comprehensive guide on room painting. We also utilized our preferred supplies detailed in this painting essentials list. Having the correct tools can simplify the task with impressive outcomes.

Since we desired a neat, sharp boundary between the dark charcoal hue and the white, we applied Frogtape painter’s tape in every corner. I’m a newcomer to Frogtape, and I must admit – I’m convinced!! It produces a truly excellent, sharp line without any seepage. The secret, however, is to peel off the tape before it is fully dry. This will stop the paint from lifting off with the tape.

Expense for painting this accent wall:

This striking before and after accent wall cost us precisely nothing – because all the paint was leftover. Hooray!!

Next week on the One Room Challenge:

Today I gave you a really big sneak peek of our Master Bedroom makeover. The headboard, end tables, and lights are all DIY projects that we’ll talk about later…
