Building a Cozy Christmas for Every Stage of Life
If you’re new here today, welcome! This post is part of a weeklong series. We’re talking all things Christmas, and so far we’ve covered choosing a Christmas tree. Once the tree is picked out and you’re ready to decorate, all the decor options can feel like a lot!
I’ve found it helpful to start with a general Christmas color scheme. It’s a great place to begin the decision-making process. From there, you can mix and match with pieces you already own and add just a few new things for a bit of freshness.
Feeling overwhelmed by all the Christmas color scheme options?
We’ve all been there: standing in the holiday decor aisle, dazed by row after row of choices. Where on earth do you begin?! I put my thinking cap on and came up with some practical tips for blending our trusty favorites with this year’s newest pieces, for a look that feels both fresh and cozy.
Tips for choosing a Christmas color scheme

- Take Stock of Your Existing Decor (that you love): Look at the colors already in your home. They’ll help guide your choices. For example, I’ve always loved the look of aqua blue and red for Christmas (you can see it in our Christmas house tour here), but after using it one year, I realized I prefer a more neutral palette in this home.
- Start with decor you own that can be used all winter, then add traditional Christmas colors: Rather than feeling like everything has to be Christmas red and green, simply adding a bit of Christmas color or themed pieces to neutral decor instantly makes it feel more “holiday-ish.”
For example, here are some pieces I recently spotted on a shopping trip to a big-box store in the US. I’m picturing them on the living room couch and the coffee table in front of it. The green items can be used all winter long, as can the vase and faux greenery. (These can be bought at that store, and the links are affiliate links.)
- Mix & match prints and textures: Linens, fabrics, and ribbons are a fun way to add interest to your Christmas color scheme. Browse magazines, online boards, or shops for something that feels festive and fun to you, then build a decor palette around it. Below is a sample Christmas table setting, pairing a plaid table runner and napkins with plain white plates and red accents.
- Bring in Christmas decor from your past, paired with natural elements, for a fun & festive look. Last year I had fun with bedroom Christmas decorations. They didn’t take long to pull together, and they made such a cozy space for the dark days of winter. If you like decorating with real boughs, pine cones, and other natural elements, take a look at this interview I did with a friend about nature Christmas decorations.
- Try a monochromatic look – Last year I tried neutral Christmas tree decor in a mix of creams, browns, and wood tones. With white twinkle lights, I loved how it looked in our dining room. (It’s pictured at the top of this post.) Below are some similar pieces from my online shop.

- Add special lighting to any color scheme for a festive feeling. Twinkle lights and candles can be added to any palette to give a warm glow for the holiday season. They echo the sparkle of gold and snow glittering in the moonlight, which are perfect Christmas colors!
What Christmas color scheme are you decorating with this year?
I’d love to hear what you’re using for your Christmas color scheme this year. When I was a little girl, I always loved how my Aunt Violet decorated her Christmas tree with a different theme and colors every year. She has since gone to glory, but I’m looking forward to your answers just as I used to look forward to heading to Aunt Vi’s for Christmas dinner!
I always love a peek into your Christmas homes, too. Thanks in advance for sharing with us!
