Embracing the Coastal Grandmother Aesthetic

Discover the coastal grandmother aesthetic, what it entails, and how to integrate it into your dwelling.

While browsing my Instagram feed, a post by Martha Stewart caught my attention, proclaiming, “Coastal Grandmother Style is Gaining Popularity in Design”.

I wondered, “What exactly constitutes ‘Coastal Grandmother Style’?”

This inquiry led me to extensive research, and I was delighted by what I uncovered!

This coastal grandmother look features coastal elements, abundant natural light, snug interiors, rustic fabrics, and antique pieces. It suits any space, from compact flats to expansive beach houses.

How did this style become popular?

My investigation suggests the Coastal Grandmother trend originated with the talented 26-year-old influencer Lex Nicoleta via her viral tiktok channel.

Her brief, insightful videos explain the Coastal Grandmother style and how to weave this look into one's lifestyle, fashion, décor, cuisine, and leisure. It has achieved massive social media traction!

Defining Coastal Grandmother Style

The “Coastal Grandmother” aesthetic is frequently seen in films by Nancy Meyers.

I view coastal grandmother style as a close relative of the cottage core trend. Lex Nicoleta describes the coastal grandmother as someone who:

  • prefers refined and comfortable furnishings
  • adopts muted and flowing attire (such as a classic white button down shirt and bucket hats)
  • tends to work in her garden
  • prepares delightful, tasty food inspired by Ina Garten

She enjoys a leisurely pace, visiting the farmer’s market with a wicker basket for her finds. Her kitchen island is where she crafts sophisticated recipes for relaxed, elegant dinner gatherings.

Embracing the coastal grandmother feel does not require belonging to an affluent, middle-aged cohort. Many younger individuals, not near Grandmother age, are adopting this design style in their homes and daily lives.

Nancy Meyers' films, such as Diane Keaton in Father of the Bride and Meryl Streep in Somethings Gotta Give, showcase this style. The simple details in these movies resonate deeply, leading to its growing popularity in home décor.

Integrating Coastal Grandmother Style into Your Décor

I thoroughly enjoyed incorporating some fashionable coastal grandma décor into our own space. Since I already appreciate cottagecore-style furnishings, this transition was seamless!

I prove that a massive seaside estate is unnecessary to bring this cozy style to any home size! I utilized existing decor items, assembling an edited look featuring beachy blue tones, white highlights, and wicker baskets.

Consider these straightforward Coastal Grandmother style suggestions you might like to implement; chances are, you possess many of these items already!:

  • Blue & white – This style integrates substantial blue and white within its predominantly neutral palette, fittingly mirroring the ocean. I observed the presence of many ginger jars; lacking exact ones, I incorporated all my vintage blue and white dishes and pitchers throughout my bookcase display.
  • Florals – Incorporate florals by mixing them through textiles (like throw pillows) and arranging them in spaces. While a coastal gran might have a vast field of fresh blooms, I combined grocery store fresh flowers and faux flowers in my décor.
  • For a coastal feel, incorporate seascape artwork; large prints suit walls while small ones look nice on bookcases and shelves.
  • Use wicker accessories; a wicker basket on the living room shelf stores TV remotes, and a wicker tray on the coffee table groups a floral arrangement and candle. Because coastal grandmother style often uses a neutral backdrop (our walls are white), natural items like wood and wicker add warmth.
  • Display bowls of fresh fruit and veggies, fitting for our coastal gran who enjoys gardening and cooking. I particularly enjoy a bowl of lemons, though apples, pears, and artichokes also serve as lovely decor.
  • A collection of books and lit candles creates a cozy atmosphere; feature books on your shelves as decor, and you might just feel inspired to read them!
  • Consider breezy linens: think white linen curtains, linen table runners and tablecloths, and vintage linens under flower vases. This linen theme extends to your wardrobe with breezy linen pants (I have a favorite pair!), breezy button-downs, and a bucket hat for sun protection during flower picking or boat trips!
