Seeking simple, resilient houseplants that demand little upkeep? Discover the most common varieties detailed below.
A time passed when adorning spaces with living greenery became a popular style.
Initially, I hesitated to adopt this trend, despite admiring their appearance; past experiences with houseplant failures made me cautious. However, I eventually decided to try again.
I conducted research using terms like 'easy indoor plants,' 'low maintenance indoor plants,' and similar phrases to find the most forgiving houseplants.
I previously shared a post on arranging houseplants on farmhouse shelves, feeling uncertain about my ability to sustain those lovely plants.
Now, two years later, they remain vibrant and look wonderful!

Why Do My Houseplants Keep Perishing?
If your plants are declining despite your careful attention, examine light, heat, humidity, watering, and feeding. A deficiency in any of these crucial elements could prevent them from thriving.
Many years ago, I greatly desired an indoor orange plant; pictures suggested that fresh citrus scents in my living room would be delightful.
For a particular event, my husband presented me with a gorgeous mandarin orange tree, a small plant adorned with tiny mandarin oranges.
I was over the moon and followed every single step of the guide exactly as written.
However, as the vibrant days of Winter faded into a gray and rainy Autumn, I observed it exhibiting symptoms of distress. In a panic, I contacted the florist where my husband had bought the tree. While he politely attempted to diagnose my ailing plant, he posed a crucial question:
“What type of heating system do you have in your home?,” he inquired.
Detailing our century-old home lacking insulation and relying solely on a wood stove, he emitted one of those telling “ah ah” sounds, signaling, “Now I understand the issue!”
He reluctantly stated, “Firstly, citrus trees are among the trickiest houseplants to maintain, and regrettably, I doubt this orange tree will ever flourish in your home.”
Since that specific indoor plant (and the majority of them) demands a steady minimum temperature, it never had a fighting chance in our drafty residence when the temperature plummeted so drastically during Winter evenings!

Factors to weigh when selecting low-maintenance houseplants
When picking indoor plants, bear in mind the specific environment you can offer them and what would suit you best. Here are the primary aspects to evaluate:
- What lighting does it need? Will it prosper in dim conditions? Does it require full sun, partial shade, or filtered light?
- What is its watering schedule? Will you remember to hydrate it consistently? If you neglect it, will it persist with sporadic watering?
- Does it need high moisture levels? If so, it might require regular misting or placement near a humidity tray.
- Are you looking for a plant that doesn't demand much attention?
Inspect the labels on the specimens you're eyeing. If missing, lookup the variety on your device to see if it integrates well with your interior. Also, staff at greenhouses or flower shops are typically eager to assist with selection.
Remember to nourish your greenery as well!
I learned in a horticulture lesson that, much like us, flora need more than just hydration to thrive. Ensure you provide plant food designed specifically for indoor varieties. Adhere to the recommended feeding frequency. (I utilize plant food spikes for mine. – affiliate link)
