Reflecting Self Through Home Design

This marks Day 2 of the series “31 Ways to Make Home Uniquely You”; review Day 1 here. Also, our $159 kitchen makeover is entered in the Grand Prize contest at One Project Closer; you can support it by clicking “vote” here. Now, let's look at today’s topic!

Some time ago, I had the chance to attend a design workshop led by Jane Lockhart from the TV program Colour Confidential.

That evening was wonderfully engaging; I both learned and felt inspired to act at home!

Although I likely jotted down notes that night, I cannot locate them now. Fortunately, certain concepts remain vividly in my mind (which is impressive!)

Jane administered a light personality assessment, showing how our individual traits influence our decorating preferences.

I only recall these two types:

1. The Hesitant Decorator:

  • This person dedicates extensive time, days, or even years to scrutinizing and agonizing over every home decoration choice.
  • The apprehension of selecting the 'incorrect' option prevents them from finalizing any decisions.
  • Consequently, their home stays consistently unaltered. {And this likely leaves them unsatisfied.}

2. The Spontaneous Decorator:

  • This individual perpetually has projects underway.
  • For instance, while painting her bathroom yellow, she might suddenly envision an even better look for her kitchen!
  • This sudden kitchen inspiration causes her to pause the bathroom work and dive into the 'new idea' with great energy.
  • The outcome is numerous unfinished projects scattered around… {And this probably isn't what makes her happy.}

I remember these two decorating profiles because I was trapped cycling between them.

Our kitchen appearance when we first moved in...

Tired of indecision, I would sometimes make a spur-of-the-moment choice, which might not meet expectations, leading me back to indecision.

I needed to find balance; I had to successfully combine indecisive and impulsive tendencies to master my decision-making.

But how did that happen??
