Create an affordable floating frame for your canvas art with this simple DIY guide.
Previously, I shared our Boho style living roomwall decor</a above the sofa.
We are truly delighted with how it looks.
Once it was hung, we decided to enhance it by crafting a floating frame.
Since canvas frames can cost a lot, this do-it-yourself floating frame offers a cost-effective solution.

Materials Required for a Floating Frame
- 1 x 2 pine boards

- miter saw
- brad nails
- brad nailer
- slim wood for the corners (we used scraps from our shiplap wall)
- wood stain, if desired
- clear wood sealant, such as polyurethane

Step 1: Use a mitered corner to trim the 1×2 boards to the necessary dimensions.
A bit of calculation is needed here; measure your canvas and note those dimensions. Ours measured 57″ x 37 1/4″.
Next, decide on the space between the frame and the canvas edge. We aimed for 1/8 of an inch, but a measurement error resulted in slightly over 1/4 of an inch—and we like it regardless!)
Calculate the length by adding the canvas measurement, the desired gap measurement, and the wood thickness (3/4); this is the length for your mitered frame pieces.
The final size of our frame turned out to be 57 x 37 1/4.
Step 2: Cut the veneer boards at a 45-degree angle to form the support backing for the frame.

Step 3: Affix the mitered corners using wood glue and secure them with brad nails.

For Step 4, fasten the corner sections to the rear of the frame with 1/4 inch brad nails.

Although I neglected to photograph this stage, I captured a picture of the completed frame with canvas already mounted, showing the corner attachment.
Step 5 involves either staining or sealing the frame.
Since the frame looked lovely with a light, natural tone against the canvas, I opted only for a clear matte sealer, though any stain shade suits your desired aesthetic.
In Step 6, gently affix the floating frame to the canvas print using the corner veneer pieces as a backing with small nails.

We initially tested short brad nails for this step, but discovered they were slightly too long and pierced the canvas; please ensure your nails are not excessive in length!

Step 6 concludes with displaying your new canvas in a floating frame!
Knowing some readers find how to hang a picture on the wall challenging, I'll guide you on mounting this sizable floating frame canvas art above our sofa.
Materials needed for mounting a large canvas on a wall include:

- Picture wire rated for up to 30 pounds
- Small D- Ring Hangers
- Standard Picture Hooks supporting up to 30 pounds
Step 1: Affix the small D-Ring hangers to the canvas frame approximately one-third down each side using the included screw.

Step 2: Thread the wire through each D hook and twist until it is snug and secure.

When placing the picture wire, ensure the overall length rests near the top border, but not over it.

Step 3: Insert the picture hook into the wall using a hammer.

Step 5 lets you display your fresh artwork and simply enjoy it!
