After viewing our rather uninspired townhouse powder room bathroom, my spouse and I resolved to finally renovate the space.
As is typical for any successful room transformation narrative, the initial segment showcases the pre-makeover condition.
Usually, I manage to capture clear visuals reflecting the actual state, but I must disclose upfront that photographing this room proves extremely challenging!
Observe that these excellent before shots were captured using my iPad placed on a shelf; there was simply no space for me to fit in too!
The Powder Room Renovation Commences
Identify what functions well and what requires improvement.
Regarding usability, our powder room operated just adequately.
The issue was entirely centered on its appearance!

The vanity section featured a vanity that looked assembled from mismatched countertop and cabinet remnants, complemented by an outdated mirror and a line of spotlight bulbs giving off a decidedly '90s' vibe.

Our primary reservation before starting this project involved the flooring beneath the vanity area, as we weren't certain the newer vinyl flooring extended underneath it (and we were correct).

The toilet wall is situated directly opposite the vanity.
Note that the walls were all coated in the same plain, unremarkable beige shade provided by our house.
And with that, the tour of our powder room concludes.
To summarize, the objective of this powder room update was to achieve a more contemporary aesthetic without incurring significant expense.
Phase 1: Gather Concepts and Establish a Strategy
Truthfully, I have contemplated this powder room redesign for several years, recently compiling a post featuring powder room ideas I had been considering.
Some individuals create mood boards and meticulously detail every element in advance.
For this instance, the conceptual 'mood board' resided entirely within my mind.
This vision encompassed: a fresh paint hue, a new vanity, mirror, lighting, wall covering, shelves above the toilet, and decor to unify the look.
Phase 2: Remove What Needs Removal
Our initial hands-on action involved taking out the vanity.
We worried it might be heavily affixed to the wall, potentially harming the drywall upon removal.
Surprisingly, it detached quite easily, and it was cleared from the area in under 30 minutes!
Phase 3: Determine the Floor Solution
After removing the vanity, addressing the floor became our immediate priority because the newer vinyl flooring did not extend beneath the original vanity area.
Since our new vanity, which we will discuss later, lifted slightly off the floor, this discrepancy needed correction.
We had two choices: either replace all the flooring in the powder room and the nearby laundry room, or utilize a leftover piece from the house.
Opting to patch the area allowed us to save both time and money.

Step 4 outlines the procedure for installing sheet vinyl flooring.
Before I present this simple tutorial on patching and installing sheet vinyl flooring, understand that this was our first time attempting this task!
However, we researched experts on YouTube and adhered to their advice.
This is precisely how we executed the repair:
- Use a heavy duty utility knife with a keen edge to trim the vinyl floor remnant to the appropriate width.
- Overlap the section where the old and new vinyl meet, then cut through both layers using a straight edge, such as a metal square, and a sharp heavy duty utility knife. (This step proved challenging because the upper vinyl piece shifted significantly. A solution I recently discovered is to first secure it with duct tape—a brilliant tip!)
For expert guidance on cutting a seam in sheet vinyl, we referenced this useful video:
3. Apply the vinyl using adhesive. We employed Roberts Multipurpose Adhesive along with a v-notched trowel.
Ultimately, this is how our floor appeared after we patched in the vinyl.

Is it flawless? No! Nevertheless, we were quite satisfied with our initial effort at patching vinyl sheet flooring. Plus, the new vanity will conceal most of it!
With that minor floor detail resolved, we can now move on to the more enjoyable wall updates!
