Kaanapali Beach, Hula Pie, and a Day in Lahaina

Our Hawaii adventures today take us to Kaanapali Beach, where I taste Hula Pie for the first time. Come along and we’ll show you the sights!

Join us at Kaanapali Beach for Hula Pie on our Hawaii travels today!

On this particular day, three of my long-held dreams came true:

  1. Seeing the ocean in many different shades of aqua blue.
  2. Sipping a “frosty (non-alcoholic) drink with an umbrella on top.”
  3. Strolling along a white sandy beach…

I had pictured myself writing in a journal every day, but that didn’t happen! This day, though, I did write in it. Here’s what it said:

Saturday, April 13,

“Oh, how time is flying!

I’m writing this from our lanai. It’s only 8 pm, but it’s pitch black outside. The tiki torches by the pool are lit, couples stroll past hand in hand, and splashes from happy people in the pool drift up. The evening sounds mingle with the rolling, breaking waves on the beach…

Today was “beach day.” After waking at 5 am and watching the sunrise from our coffee-time bench,

we packed up our water bottles and sunscreen and set off to explore Kaanapali Beach. We found a lovely walking path that wound its way around and through a string of gorgeous resorts.

The path offered patches of shade, a welcome break from the sun. Although it was cloudy and overcast (we found out later it was vog), the heat was more than we’re used to back home. Gentle ocean breezes drifted by carrying a scent we can only describe as “Hawaii” – sweet and fresh.

Just when we thought we might melt from the heat, we arrived at Whaler’s Village.

It was exactly 10:29 a.m., and Leilani’s had just opened.

We decided it was time for a mid-morning coffee break, but this time with frosty drinks (me: a virgin mango daiquiri [Oh my stars, it was delicious!] and Irwin: a Coke) and a slice of Hula Pie.

Apparently this pie is a Hawaiian tradition: an Oreo crust with vanilla macadamia nut ice cream and chocolate sauce. [Each slice has 1 pint of ice cream in it!!]

After our delightful frosty treats, we headed straight out to the beach.

Ahh…the aqua water…

{Well…I suppose it was technically tan-coloured…}

For our mid-afternoon outing, we drove to Lahaina to check out the artists under the banyan tree (mostly artists) and stroll through the charming shops.

Since we’d had our fill of Costco meat and cheese sandwiches, we beat the supper rush and went to Bubba Gump’s in the late afternoon.

It was such a fun place to eat ~ dining with open windows, the beach view outside, and birds flying in!!

The coconut-crusted shrimp was amazing…and I loved my mahi mahi sandwich.

We did a little shopping and bought the boys some t-shirts (7 for $20!). Now, after a soak in the hot tub, we’re ready for bed. {What?? It’s only 8:00??}

*Once again, I’m including a Family Reel of pictures from this day. Remember, the rules of a Family Reel are that they include ALL the pictures from the day ~ even the unedited rejects and the sideways ones… The signs shown at the end of the slideshow are from the Bubba Gump restaurant. We thought they were hilarious…}
