Tips for Managing a Near Future Move

We are currently in a unique phase, simultaneously unpacking and settling into our new rental residence while also preparing for a subsequent relocation in approximately seven months.

The encouraging aspect is that we now know we will remain in this vicinity, allowing us to move forward with housing decisions. The short-term rental arrangement served us well while seeking employment; now we have time to explore a more lasting living situation and embark on some serious house searching—a mix of daunting and thrilling!

I thought I might have covered moving sufficiently, but several of you have shared in messages that you are planning moves and seeking advice. Therefore, I will offer just one more perspective on this subject (for the present!).

Moving Tips

To be honest, some aspects went smoothly, and others did not!

What proved successful:

  1. I searched online for "moving advice" and discovered a wealth of valuable information. (This particular tip is excellent!)
  2. For storing clothing, leave garments on the closet rod, slide a large garbage bag underneath and around them (like a pillowcase), secure the bag at the top leaving the hanger hooks visible. When moving, simply rehang them and undo the bag. It is incredibly straightforward and fast!
  3. Retain items already inside your dresser drawers within those same drawers. This optimizes space utilization and ensures easy retrieval upon arrival at your new home.
  4. Begin decluttering as soon as possible. I am thankful I initiated this process early, allowing me adequate time. The act of packing is stressful enough on its own; debating "keep or discard?" becomes much harder as the move date nears.
  5. To ease the settling-in process, pack drawer organizers (such as silverware trays) as a complete unit. Wrap it with a towel, secure with clear tape, and place it in a box. Upon reaching your new location, simply unwrap the towel, put it in the drawer, and you are set.
  6. Keep a clear plastic container ready to store all curtain hardware and picture hangers as you take things down. Simply affix the lid, and it is ready for use in the new house.
  7. Similarly, keep your packing supplies (Sharpie markers, clear packing tape, scissors, and a binder) together in a large tray (ideally in the same spot) so you can easily locate them when needed.
  8. Review your freezer and pantry contents and attempt to clear them out (as much as feasible) before the designated moving date.
  9. Prepare a useful "first day" kit containing immediate necessities (like bedding, coffee, etc.). We also packed all our attire in our suitcases for immediate access.

What presented difficulties:

Moving Tips
  1. The cleaning! ~ at both locations… I tried cleaning extensively before we left, but it felt like an endless task! Fortunately, several kind friends assisted with final details before moving day ~ but next time, I must devise a smoother approach for that. (I did find the marvelous Mr. Clean Magic Eraser, though!;)) Returning to our old house for cleaning post-move was tough… and then realizing I left my mop bucket at the new house (a ferry ride away!!).
Moving Tips

2. Fitting everything into the truck… Even with many helpers moving boxes and furniture to the truck, only my husband was inside to manage it. While it was swift and our belongings avoided rain damage, having more people inside the truck to assist with organization during loading would have been beneficial.

Moving Tips

3. A friend suggested loading furniture last so large items could be positioned in rooms first, allowing boxes to be stacked around them. This was a brilliant concept, yet our reality differed; we were rushed to move boxes to accommodate setting down the couches…
