Spring Cleaning Hacks for Every Room, at Your Own Pace

Easy spring cleaning hacks to help you refresh your home for a new season, with no pressure and no perfection, just practical ideas that work.

It’s almost spring, that time of year when the light changes, the windows show a little more dust, and everything feels ready for a fresh start.

Spring cleaning doesn’t have to be a massive, exhausting project. It can be simple and practical, done in small pockets of time.

Today I’m sharing spring cleaning hacks for every room of the house, ideas you can pick and choose from to freshen your space without overdoing it. Put on your favorite music or movie, start wherever feels easiest, and let’s make your home feel lighter for the season.

Before You Start: A Few Gentle Spring Cleaning Tips

You don’t need a perfect plan or a full weekend to get started. A few simple habits make spring cleaning feel more doable:

  • Start with one room or one task. Small wins count.
  • Set a timer. Even 15 minutes makes a difference.
  • Declutter as you go. Keep a donation box nearby and move on.
  • Use what you already have. Spring cleaning isn’t about buying more.
  • Stop before you’re exhausted. This is meant to help, not drain you.

Spring cleaning in the kitchen is the perfect time to clean the large appliances that often get overlooked.

1. Kitchen:

  • Steam clean the microwave: Heat a bowl of water with lemon slices for a few minutes to loosen grime, then wipe it away easily. Here are my favorite homemade cleaners for the kitchen.
  • Deodorize the garbage disposal: Grind ice cubes and citrus peels to freshen and clean the disposal.
  • Organize pantry shelves: Toss out outdated food and wipe down the pantry shelves.
  • Deep clean your electric stove: I wrote a detailed post about clever tricks for cleaning a coil stovetop. (Did you know you can “pop the hood” on it??) If you don’t have a coil stovetop, polish your glass top or gas range.
  • Streak-free stainless steel: Use a microfiber mirror cloth and water to shine stainless steel.
  • Refresh cutting boards: Sprinkle baking soda on a damp cutting board, scrub it, then rinse for a fresh, clean surface.
  • Shine your sink fixtures & make it smell great: Sprinkle your sink with baking soda and scrub it with half a lemon. It will fizz, smell great, and rinse to a shine!
  • Clean the fridge coils: Use a vacuum with a brush attachment to remove dust and debris from the refrigerator coils so it runs more efficiently.
  • Degrease cabinets: Wipe down kitchen cabinets with a mix of dish soap, vinegar, and warm water to cut through grease buildup. This cleaner is not only the best way to clean glass shower doors, it’s also a good homemade all-purpose cleaner that works well on grease.
  • Revitalize wooden utensils: Rub wooden utensils with mineral oil to keep them from drying out and cracking.
  • Freshen the dishwasher: Place a cup of white vinegar on the top rack and run an empty dishwasher cycle to remove odors and buildup.
  • Clean the range hood filter: Soak range hood filters in hot, soapy water to dissolve grease, then scrub and rinse thoroughly.
  • Organize under-sink space: I know… I don’t like this job either! I do like having an under-the-kitchen-sink mat to make things easier to clean.
  • Descale the coffee maker: Run a mix of equal parts water and vinegar through the coffee maker, followed by two cycles of clean water.
  • Tidy spice jars: Arrange spice jars alphabetically or by category for easy access.
  • Revitalize wooden cutting boards: Rub cutting boards with coarse salt and lemon juice, then rinse and oil them for a natural clean.
  • Wipe down light fixtures: Dust and wipe down light fixtures to brighten the kitchen and remove built-up grime.
  • De-gunk sink stoppers: Remove the sink stoppers and clean them thoroughly with hot, soapy water to prevent clogs and odors.
  • Scrub tile grout: The same method as how to clean tile and grout in the shower works on tile and grout in any space. (Baking soda, hydrogen peroxide, water, and a grout brush.)
  • Clean refrigerator drawers: Remove the drawers and shelves, wash them with warm, soapy water, and dry them thoroughly before putting them back. Place an open box of baking soda in the back of the fridge to keep it smelling fresh.
  • Clean under large appliances: Get some help and move the large appliances (stove and refrigerator), if possible, and clean the floor underneath them.

2. Bathroom

  • Let steam & time help you clean the shower: Run a hot shower to create steam, then follow these directions for the BEST way to clean glass shower doors.
  • Deep clean grout: Use a mix of baking soda and hydrogen peroxide to scrub the grout lines in the shower and on the floor with a grout brush, then rinse for a brighter look. (Click here for details on the best ways to clean grout on a tile floor and in showers.)
  • Clean out toothbrush holders: Soak toothbrush holders and clean them out.
  • Unclog drains naturally: Pour a mix of baking soda and vinegar down the drains, followed by hot water, to break down buildup and eliminate odors.
  • Shine faucets and fixtures: Polish chrome fixtures with a microfiber mirror cloth and water.
  • Check the shower curtain liner: We live in a very humid climate, and my shower curtain liner has a hard time staying free of a light pink substance. (It’s yucky…) Some people toss them in the wash with a load of towels and find that cleans them well. That hasn’t worked for me. After lots of experimenting, my solution is to buy very cheap shower curtain liners at the dollar store and replace them every few months.
  • Freshen towels: Wash towels with baking soda and vinegar to remove odors and soften the fabric.
  • Organize the medicine cabinet: Remove expired medications and toiletries, then organize what’s left with bins or dividers.
  • Refresh the showerhead: Fill a plastic bag with vinegar, secure it around the showerhead with a rubber band, and let it soak overnight to remove mineral deposits.
  • Disinfect the trash can: Clean the trash can with soapy water, let it sit for a few minutes, then rinse thoroughly. Put a cotton ball with a few drops of lemon essential oil in the bottom of the can for a fresh scent.
  • Organize under-sink cabinet: Use stackable bins or baskets to maximize space and keep toiletries and cleaning supplies tidy.
  • Clean exhaust fan grilles and heater fan blades: Remove dust and debris from the exhaust fan grilles with a vacuum attachment or a damp cloth.
  • Sanitize bath toys: Soak bath toys in a solution of hot water and vinegar, then rinse and air dry them to kill bacteria and mold.
  • Wash the shower mat: Machine wash or soak rubber or fabric shower mats in hot water and detergent, then air dry them thoroughly.
  • Clean shower door tracks: Remove dirt and grime from the shower door tracks with an old toothbrush and a mix of vinegar and water.
  • Wipe down light fixtures: Dust and wipe down light fixtures and bulbs with a microfiber cloth to improve brightness and remove dust.
  • Use an old toothbrush for hard-to-reach areas: An old toothbrush works perfectly for scrubbing around faucet handles, drains, and under the edge of the sink.

Spring clean your laundry by washing it with baking soda and adding vinegar to the rinse cycle. It really works!

3. Living Room

  • Declutter first: Start by decluttering the living room, sorting items into keep, donate, and toss piles.
  • Dust from top to bottom: Dust ceiling fans, light fixtures, and shelves first, then work your way down to furniture and baseboards.
  • Wash window treatments: Take down curtains and drapes to launder them, or send them to the dry cleaner for a refresh.
  • Vacuum upholstery: Use a vacuum with an upholstery attachment to thoroughly clean sofas, chairs, and cushions.
  • Spot clean furniture: Treat stains and spills on upholstery with a gentle upholstery cleaner or a mix of water and mild detergent.
  • Rotate area rugs: Rotate area rugs to prevent uneven wear and sun exposure, and vacuum underneath for a thorough clean.
  • Clean electronics: Use a microfiber cloth to gently wipe down TVs, game consoles, and other electronic devices.
  • Organize the entertainment center: Arrange DVDs, video games, and remotes neatly, and dust the shelves.
  • Revive wood furniture: Polish wood furniture with a wood cleaner and conditioner to restore shine and reduce the look of scratches.
  • Refresh throw pillows and blankets: Launder or spot clean throw pillows and blankets, then fluff them for a cozy look.
  • Clean and polish hardwood floors: Sweep or vacuum the hardwood floors, then mop with a gentle cleaner for a shiny finish.
  • Dust and polish furniture: Skip the dusting spray! Use a damp microfiber cloth to pick up dust from surfaces instead of just moving it around.
  • Wipe down light switches and fixtures: Use a damp cloth to wipe down light switches, outlet covers, and light fixtures to remove dust and fingerprints.
  • Freshen air vents: Vacuum the air vents and wipe them down with a damp cloth to remove dust and allergens.
  • Clean the fireplace and chimney: Sweep out the ashes from the fireplace and schedule a professional chimney cleaning if needed.
  • Tidy bookshelves: Organize the books and decorative items on the shelves, and dust the shelves and book spines.
  • Dust and polish mirrors and picture frames: Use a glass cleaner on mirrors and frames, then wipe them with a microfiber cloth.
  • Fluff cushions: Fluff sofa and chair cushions and rotate them to prevent sagging and wear.
  • Freshen the air with houseplants: Wipe the leaves of houseplants with a damp cloth to remove dust and help them look their best.
  • Vacuum and clean baseboards: Use a vacuum attachment or a damp cloth to clean baseboards and remove dust and grime.
  • Clean and shine decorative accents: Wipe down decorative pieces like vases, sculptures, and figurines with a microfiber cloth.
  • Refresh throw rugs: Shake out and vacuum throw rugs, or launder them if they’re machine washable.
  • Organize cables and cords: Use cable organizers or zip ties to neatly arrange and hide cables and cords.
  • Dust and clean window sills: Wipe down window sills with a damp cloth to remove dust, dirt, and dead bugs. Here’s our favorite way to clean grimy wooden blinds.
  • Freshen upholstered furniture: Sprinkle baking soda on upholstered furniture, let it sit for 15 minutes, then vacuum to remove odors and freshen the fabric.
