Searching for a distinctive and touching present? This guide on crafting a lavender sachet from vintage linens is exactly what you require! These charming pouches, stuffed with calming lavender, make ideal tokens for pals, relatives, colleagues, or educators. Their wonderful aroma and retro allure guarantee they’ll be cherished by any recipient.
My feelings overflow whenever I spot vintage linens.
It brings to mind my Grandmas and the eras gone by (that I’ve only read about!) of slipping a handkerchief onto pretty dress sleeves.
This DIY lavender sachet project today features vintage linen as its main material.
Nonetheless, if vintage linen is missing from your supplies, any textile will work perfectly.
Actually, I believe it would be adorable and deeply nostalgic to create these for your grown kids using their infant garments. I’ve also heard of women fashioning them from their wedding attire. (Though I couldn’t imagine cutting mine apart…)
Dried lavender pouches are fragrant packets that can be tucked into drawers or cupboards to keep linens smelling fresh. Here is the method for creating them.

Instructions for Crafting a Lavender Pouch
Step 1: Scent the dried lavender with your preferred aroma.
Before you fetch your scissors and sewing machine, there is some preparation involved. To ensure your final piece smells as lovely as it appears, you’ll want to imbue the dried flower buds with fragrance.
Methods for Infusing Lavender Buds with Aroma:
I acquired dried French lavender buds from a nearby store. Following the shopkeeper’s suggestion, I placed them in a plastic vessel and added several drops of both lavender essential oil and vanilla essential oil, sealing it securely. After a few days, the aroma was incredible upon opening! (I’ve since discovered that lavender and vanilla serve as a natural moth deterrent. Bonus!)
Sources for Dried Lavender Buds
If you lack a local shop selling dried lavender buds, here are some online vendors I discovered:
- One pound of dried lavender from Amazon
- Organic Dried Lavender from Etsy

Step 2: Constructing the Lavender Pouch:
Once your lavender buds are exuding a wonderful fragrance, you can proceed to the following stages. I designed these sachets so the lavender buds reside in a detachable bag. This allows extra scent to be added to the buds as the aroma diminishes over time.
Here’s a video demonstration of the procedure:
- Begin with a fabric piece measuring 4.5 inches in width by 12 inches in length (Modify the length measurement if you only need to hem one end, as I did.)
- Fold the edges over 1/4 inch. Press with an iron. Fold the edges over 1/4 inch once more. Stitch to create a hem.
- With the right sides facing each other, fold the top downward so the seam sits just beneath the fabric’s center line. Fold the bottom upward so it just covers the top edge you just folded down. Pin the lateral sides and sew them closed.
- Trim the seams and corners. Turn the piece right side out and press with an iron.
- Sew a small inner pouch for the lavender buds using thin material (I used a flour sack towel) and place inside the outer cover.
- Decorate the front with buttons, ribbon, or baker’s twine.
Infusing the dried lavender buds with vanilla and lavender scent makes them smell amazing for a long time!I decorated these with vintage buttons and baker’s twine, but the sky is the limit for how you want to pretty these up. Lace & ribbon would also look nice.
