Craft an adorable bag in only a few hours with this complimentary messenger bag pattern I discovered!
I stumbled upon this vintage article recently.
I penned it quite a while back, and I had completely pushed it from my memory!
I recounted the tale of how a new wallet became necessary, which eventually led me to my sewing machine and a self-made messenger bag using a free online template. I followed the link to verify if the post and pattern remained available, and they certainly do!

Locating a cost-free messenger bag sewing template
I uncovered this charming bag design for a messenger bag at MMM Crafts.

Just like me, the blog's author has been writing for years and continues to do so! She boasts numerous beautiful sewing creations and templates there, so I'm certain you'll enjoy browsing as much as I did!
Reasons to adore this messenger bag pattern
I hunted extensively online for messenger bag designs. Ultimately, this one stood out for these specific reasons:
- It eliminated the need to install any zippers. (Though, I have since unearthed an simple method for adding zipper closures to throw pillows!).
- The instructions were straightforward and simple to follow.
- It can be crafted from lightweight material, ensuring it isn't cumbersome to carry.
- Its compact dimensions make it ideal for my smaller stature.
- Both the flap and pockets are adaptable for the desired aesthetics and utility.
- It featured a lengthy strap that draped over the head and rested on the side (preventing it from constantly slipping off the shoulder!).
My process for creating a messenger bag using this free template
I adhered to her instructions precisely, aside from reducing all pattern pieces by 1 inch. For instance, the primary piece required 14 x 25 inches of fabric. I trimmed mine to 13 x 24 inches. I could claim I did this on purpose, but it was actually a fortunate mishap. It resulted in a slightly smaller bag, which I genuinely appreciate.
Curious to view it??

Voila!
I embarked on this endeavor at 8 in the evening. I might have nearly completed it before 11, but my resolve waned while turning the strap...
Finishing a bag in just over 2 hours seemed genuinely impressive to me!
The exterior consists of cream canvas, while the lining is blue canvas fabric salvaged from an earlier curtain. I adored that it featured a reversible design, allowing me to switch between the floral or striped sides.

I used Heat & Bond in place of the fusible interfacing I lacked. I was apprehensive, but it turned out fine. {That said, I'd recommend the interfacing if you have the option.}
The sole modification I made to the original pattern (aside from scaling it down) was incorporating an additional pocket with a flap into the lining...

There is also a pocket on the back , and I lined the flap in the blue pattern fabric, too.

You can decorate the flap however your little heart desires. I wanted to go with a bit of a “shabby chic” look, so I did some pleats and fabric flowers.

I love how comfortable it is slung around my neck, and it seems to be just the perfect size. {It still holds plenty!}

I found this to be an incredibly fun project!
