I have been searching extensively for the ideal yellow throw pillows for several months.
Recently, while refreshing my living area for the spring season, I opted to undertake the project myself and create my own accessories.
When circumstances become dire, extreme actions become necessary, right?!;))
I uncovered a remarkably simple and enjoyable method to transform ordinary Ikea pillow covers into expansive striped nautical designs in under fifteen minutes.
Allow me to demonstrate the process!
Handcrafted Striped Pillow utilizing Paint

Essential Materials for this Striped Pillow Project:
- White Pillow Cover (This specific model is the GURLI from Ikea.)
- Frogtape
- Fabric Textile Medium
- Yellow Paint – I selected this variety in the shade “mustard”. Here is a comparable alternative.
- Stencil Brush
- Scrap paper (similar to a paper grocery bag)
Step 1: Fold the cushion in half to identify the central axis. Apply one strip of frog tape above the central line and another directly beneath it.
Proceed to tape the entire front surface of the pillow cover.
Step 2: Detach the tape in the areas where you desire the stripes to appear.
While it may seem odd to tape the entire surface and then remove sections – it is an efficient technique for stripes! It creates flawless dimensions – no measuring necessary!!
Step 3: Insert scrap paper – such as a grocery bag – between the fabric layers to prevent seepage.
The pigment might penetrate slightly through the material, and you certainly do not want it to transfer to the rear of the throw pillow.
Step 4: Blend your preferred hue with textile medium.
Textile medium is a fluid additive that renders paint suitable for fabric application. Given that stenciling does not demand substantial pigment, I utilized merely one teaspoon of yellow paint. I then added an equivalent measure of textile medium and combined the two.
Step 5: Employ a stencil brush to distribute the paint across the pillow surface.
The key to a successful stenciling endeavor is beginning with a minimal amount of pigment! While you can always layer more, removal is impossible once applied.
Submerge the stencil brush in pigment and remove the surplus by wiping it against the container's edges or using a paper towel.
Commence at the pillow's uppermost point and progress downward toward the lower stripe.
Eradicate paint from the tape boundaries and accumulate layers until the desired appearance is achieved. This technique produces a watercolor finish on the pillow covering.
Adhere to the guidelines printed on the textile medium container to cure the pigment.
This specific textile medium advises heat-setting the painted stripes via an iron to ensure the design withstands future laundering.
