Hello again! New visitors can review yesterday's post to meet the guest bloggers.
Today's focus is on the visual design elements for online sales. I'm not a designer, yet I find it captivating! I'm currently experimenting with Photoshop for DIY design. {It can be a gradual process!} I must thank Heather at Sewing Daisies from Australia for allowing me to use her lovely bird graphic in the button below; her blog showcases wonderful handmade items.
Let's move on to today's query.
Day 2: Establishing Product Branding {Design and Online Store Banners}

In setting up an Etsy shop, the first task is often creating a store banner. Do you design these yourself, or hire a professional? Beyond the Etsy banner, do you utilize other branding elements like tags, business cards, or thank you notes?

Initially, I used InDesign from my former job's work computer for all my graphics (with permission). Now, I collaborate with a talented graphic designer, Kristen at AhoyGraphics.com. While I determine the creative vision (as I like to be in charge!), she handles the execution, ensuring my blog and shop appear polished and professional, from banners to business cards.

I handle most of my own graphic design, crafting my Etsy shop banner using Adobe Photoshop Elements.

The software costs approximately $100, but last week I found that purchasing the Bamboo Capture (an electronic drawing tablet) for $99 includes Adobe Photoshop Elements for free. I regret not finding that deal sooner, but at least you are informed!
If graphic design isn't your strength, don't worry. Many Etsy shops feature designers offering custom work or more budget-friendly pre-made packages including shop banners, icons, and business card templates. Simply search Etsy for phrases like “Etsy banner” or “Etsy template.”
Branding Basics: Regardless of your method, maintaining a consistent and professional brand will aid your growth. Visuals are key, especially if your items resemble others. My blog, banner, buttons, and all promotional materials share the same logo, color palette, fonts, and aesthetic.
In addition to my Etsy banner, I use custom business cards, tags, hair pin cards, and customer appreciation coupon cards. I personally handwrite thank you sentiments on the reverse side of my business cards.

Despite my background in advertising and marketing, my graphic design skills are about 12 years old—quite dated! Initially, I only had tags and business cards. Once Etsy sales generated enough income for professional services and marketing, I partnered with Reni at Bliss & Tell for my new business card and hair pin card designs. I still print my own tags using my home printer and a craft store die cutter.

I create my own visuals. My son, who works in computer animation, has Photoshop, so I installed it. It sat unused for about a year until I asked him to teach me. It can be tricky, but I eventually learned. If I encounter something I don't know, I Google it until I understand. I also use stickers, thank you notes, business cards, and tags in various ways.

I design my own graphics for my business. I am not a professional designer and continuously learn in this area. I primarily use Microsoft Word for my graphics, and I also make tags and business cards for my shop.

Thank you again, everyone. I enjoy studying graphic designs (is that unusual?), as I love mastering those appealing looks, though I sometimes get very frustrated trying to figure it out alone.
I recently discovered what Jami mentioned. If you seek an Etsy banner or template designer, you can find excellent work at fair prices directly on Etsy! This could save you considerable time.
