Discover Oahu: Top Activities and Our Preferred Spots

Are you ready to start planning a getaway to the Aloha State? Here are our solutions to your urgent inquiries about lodging details, exciting activities, transportation around Oahu, and dining recommendations.

My spouse and I recently returned from our second adventure to Hawaii. Our previous excursion was to the tranquil, calm, and fragrant island of Maui.

This occasion, we opted to explore the island of Oahu.

If a Hawaiian vacation is on your agenda, my top tip is to investigate all the distinct islands. Each possesses a unique character and atmosphere, so selecting the one that aligns with your travel objectives is essential.

Oahu (particularly the Waikiki Beach & Honolulu district) exudes a bustling, urban vibe crowded with crowds and traffic. Prior to booking your flight to Oahu, understand that a significant portion will resemble a city with palm trees. We didn’t find it as serene as Maui, yet daily we enjoyed ourselves and created a treasure trove of memories!

Waikiki Beach is a stunning and lively shoreline. The mild surf and powdery sand attract visitors of every age.

Lodging options on Oahu

As you commence your quest for places to rest your head in Oahu, you will swiftly discover a vast selection to pick from. Luxury resorts and hotels line Waikiki Beach, the East and West coasts, and the North Shore (we inspected Turtle Bay Resort), alongside countless hotel, Airbnb, and VRBO rentals.

Your financial plan will direct your choice of lodging in Oahu. We opted for an Air BnB room within a hotel roughly a 20-minute stroll from Waikiki Beach. We found it matched the listing description perfectly, offering pleasant climate control, a cozy bed, a small kitchen, and a bathroom featuring a walk-in shower. The trade-off was the distance; it was a 20-minute walk to the Waikiki Beach district we favored, so we logged almost 20,000 steps daily while exploring. (We opted not to rent a vehicle. More on that subsequently.)

Factors to weigh when selecting lodgings in Oahu

Whether your preference is a resort, hotel, or Airbnb, here are the questions we pondered during our decision-making process:

  1. Is the neighborhood desirable? Is it close to the sights we most wish to visit?
  2. Does it include a kitchen? If so, what appliances are stocked? Does the coffee brewing system require particular filters or pods?
  3. Are bath linens and beach towels supplied? What is the quantity?
  4. Is there a cost-free shuttle to and from the terminal?
  5. If a vehicle is rented, what are the parking fees?
  6. What do guest ratings and feedback say about this property?
  7. Is the neighborhood secure?
  8. Does the package include a free morning meal?

Activities available in Oahu

The island offers a plethora of pastimes during your stay. Your choices should reflect your personal aspirations. If your preference is beach relaxation and sun exposure (remember the sunscreen!), numerous shorelines cater to that. For those seeking trekking and excitement, there are ample opportunities. Shopping fanatics will find an abundance of choices.

The following comprises a list of experiences we personally relished. Upon compiling the list, I observed they largely fell into a “low expense” category. This wasn’t premeditated, but it illustrates that enjoyment doesn’t require a high price tag. Be aware, however, that almost everything in Hawaii commands a higher price than our expenditures in Canada (and much of the US).

Following our list are additional suggestions that were recommended to us, though we did not partake in them.

The Waikiki Trolley offered a delightful and enjoyable way to explore Oahu.

1. Take the Waikiki Trolley

Regardless of whether you rent a vehicle during your Oahu visit, the Waikiki Trolley is strongly suggested. With three distinct routes and lines, you can reach several popular Oahu destinations aboard a pleasant open-air bus. It is quite affordable compared to parking fees or car rentals, providing access to key locations near Waikiki. We utilized the 7 day all routes pass daily.

2. Explore Ala Moana Center

Using a Waikiki Trolley pass transports you directly to the Ala Moana Shopping Center. As the world's largest open air mall, it features numerous shops and is a beautiful place to stroll through. The retail stores are generally high-end, though we did not purchase anything; the ambiance was lovely. A large food court offers diverse choices, and there is a 2 story Target alongside a Foodland Farms Grocery where we bought provisions for our stay.

We sampled the “Tropical Punch” Shave Ice blend featuring Strawberry, Pineapple, Hawaiian Punch, Ice Cream, and Condensed Milk.

3. Savor shave ice

Although we knew about shave ice previously, this was our first time trying it, and it exceeded expectations! Many spots sell shave ice, but we chose Lahaina Shave Ice. As you can observe, it is massive, making it a perfect treat to share.

4. Beach fireworks on Friday night

The Hilton Hawaiian Village was a preferred spot on Waikiki Beach. Outside the main hotel, there are Friday night fireworks on Waikiki. While not the most spectacular display we witnessed (it lasts only 4 minutes), watching fireworks on the beach as the sun set with swaying palm trees felt truly magical for us, creating a cherished memory.

5. Enjoy a free hula performance at Royal Hawaiian Center.

We first encountered the magnificent Royal Hawaiian Center upon our arrival. This lovely complex on the Waikiki strip boasts fine shops, eateries, and relaxing seating areas. We noticed a sign advertising a complimentary hula show that evening.

They host free performances daily, along with other demonstrations and classes; all Hawaiian activities and shows are listed here.

We greatly appreciated the Hawaiian music and the explanations of the hula dances, which narrated stories through movement. A hula performance involving three generations—grandmothers, mothers, and young girls—was especially moving, showcasing wonderful mentorship and cultural preservation.

A stunning vista from Turtle Bay Resort on the North Shore of Oahu, Hawaii.

6. Observe upscale hotels and resorts

Decades ago, the idea of walking through beautiful resorts seemed unimaginable, but now I embrace that sentiment!

Oahu possesses breathtaking resorts of unparalleled beauty. They are not strictly private; they warmly welcome everyone, barring their pool areas and guest rooms (and naturally, their beach chairs and umbrellas).

These resorts feature shops, restaurants, coffee houses, and lovely relaxation spots with ponds, waterfalls, and beautiful flora.

Some resorts we visited included:

  • Turtle Bay Resort – This was the most luxurious resort I have experienced; it was stunning! We enjoyed coffee and a superb pineapple coconut muffin at their Ho-Olana coffee shop.
  • Moana Surfrider – The Honolulu Coffee shop at Moana was a favorite spot we revisited multiple times.
  • The Hawaiian Hilton Village – We walked through this place almost daily and still discovered new shops and areas on our final day!
  • The Royal Hawaiian – A beautiful historic hotel.
  • Koa Hall turned out to be incredibly soothing, and we even toyed with the idea of booking a future stay—until we discovered the residency is restricted to military households.

Food vendors are a staple across Oahu. The renowned Giovanni’s Shrimp Truck sits on the North Shore, sharing a parking area with numerous other tasty choices.

Embark on a North Shore excursion.

Venturing past the bustling Waikiki shoreline toward the north reveals a contrasting landscape. Urban high-rises give way to pastoral expanses of farmland and cattle ranches. Quaint communities are interspersed throughout, offering a vibe worlds apart from the tourist hubbub of Waikiki.

Haleiwa became our top pick on the North Shore. This charming hub is packed with boutique shops and eateries, plus a parking lot teeming with food trucks. My spouse finally sampled the iconic Giovanni’s Shrimp Truck and was thoroughly impressed!

The North Shore boasts stunning coastlines, including the legendary Banzai Pipeline, famous for surfing contests. We spent some time searching for those towering, wild waves, but it seems the season wasn't quite right for that spectacle...

Waimea Botanical Gardens expects precipitation; after all, it’s a rainforest environment!

A highlight of our North Shore itinerary was Waimea Falls Park & Botanical Gardens. It featured a breathtaking stroll along a paved pathway culminating in a magnificent waterfall.

Planning a visit to Waimea? Remember it’s a lush rainforest. During our trip, it poured continuously! Yet, it was a warm, humid downpour with intermittent sunshine. I highly recommend a rain jacket; the gift shop sells a cleverly designed poncho-like bag that worked wonders for me!;). Disposable rain gear is also a smart addition to pack?

Indulge in a Dole Whip at the Dole Plantation.

Wandering the North Shore, you’ll inevitably encounter the Dole Plantation. I had my reservations, but we skipped wandering the pineapple fields (though they’re visible from the road—pretty cool). The plantation is essentially a massive retail space filled with pineapple-themed merchandise.

We steered clear of the touristy knick-knacks, but we did sample the Dole Whip. It’s utterly delicious! For the uninitiated, think of it as pineapple soft-serve. There’s even a Dole Whip recipe available if you wish to recreate it at home. We were surprised by the generous portions and wished we’d split one. I personally couldn't polish off my entire bowl.

Snorkeling adventure.

We heard Oahu has spectacular snorkeling spots. Our organized tour, however, was a letdown. (I’ll elaborate on that later.) We gave it a go anyway, and my husband managed to spot some charming yellow-striped fish.

The view from our table at the Hula Grill Waikiki.

Breakfast or lunch at a beachfront eatery.

Oahu’s dining scene is diverse, ranging from restaurants to food trucks. We were forearmed with the knowledge that prices are steep. Nevertheless, lunch and breakfast menus are consistently more affordable than dinner. Consequently, we dined at just two sit-down restaurants during our nine-day stay. (We opted to cook simple meals in our kitchenette and also enjoyed budget-friendly food trucks and courts.)

One morning, we enjoyed breakfast at the Hula Grill and a midday meal at Duke’s Waikiki. Both spots sit right on Waikiki Beach, making the experience feel almost dreamy as we admired the stunning surroundings!

Malasada tasting.

Prior to our trip, my husband researched malasadas, a treat I was unfamiliar with. One evening, after we shared a Raising Cane’s chicken dinner at the Royal Hawaiian food court, he made a beeline for Penny’s Waikiki Malasadas and purchased three. Goodness! These are akin to freshly made filled donuts and are simply divine. We intended to save some for the following day, but alas, we devoured the entire batch that night. They were that good.

The refreshing evening air and the sunset painting Waikiki Beach were daily highlights.

Beach sunset viewing.

While in Oahu, we made a point to check the daily sunset times. Then, we sought out a beachside spot to witness the spectacle. It was truly magnificent!

Local coffee shop exploration

When exploring new places, discovering charming coffee houses to sip a great brew and snack on pastries is always a priority. Below are some of our top picks on Oahu:

  • Honolulu Coffee, located inside the Moana Surfrider, was a repeat stop for us, especially for their macadamia nut cookies. Keep in mind they wrap up shop around 5 or 6 pm.
  • Island Brew Coffeehouse, nestled in the Hawaii Kai Shopping Center, is a true gem. Thanks to our friend Emma, we found a delightful spot where you can sip coffee right beside a canal, surrounded by tables and umbrellas.
  • Island Vintage Coffee, situated in the Royal Hawaiian Center, remained open well past 6 pm and served excellent decaf options. Their baked goods fly off the shelves quickly, so one evening we shared a gluten-free cookie—the last one remaining—which was absolutely delicious!
  • Lappert’s Ice Cream & Coffee, found at the Hilton Hawaiian Village, stays open late and boasts the most incredible ice cream (and decaf Americanos). Be ready to wait in a lengthy line, as it’s incredibly popular!

13. Other enjoyable activities on Oahu (that we missed)

Here are a few suggestions that came highly recommended, though for various reasons, we weren't able to experience them ourselves:

  • Explore Pearl Harbor and the USS Arizona
  • Conquer Diamond Head (Oh, how we regretted missing this! The weather simply wouldn't cooperate…)
  • Visit Hanauma Bay State Park for a snorkeling adventure—this was definitely at the top of our list, but never happened. Between transport challenges and unfavorable weather, it just didn't fit into our plans.
  • Check out the Polynesian Culture Center

Hang on tight during the Waikiki Trolley ride! It’s an open-air bus shuttle, and the wind whistles right through.

Navigating Oahu – Transportation choices

For this getaway, we opted out of renting a car. Between the rental fee and daily parking costs, we figured it was a smart way to save money and add a unique twist to our vacation adventure.

Would we repeat this? Honestly, likely not. However, we gave it a genuine shot!

We heard that Oahu boasts one of the world's top public transportation systems. Before departing, my husband researched the options thoroughly. It appeared we could reach any desired destination via their city bus (known as The Bus) or the Waikiki Trolley.

Naturally, individuals will react to these choices differently, and the following reflects our personal viewpoint.

We were big fans of the Waikiki Trolley. It felt more like a sightseeing bus than a simple taxi ride between points A and B. Drivers offered commentary on the area and culture, and we found it amusing how differently each driver presented the information. We often wondered which details were actually true!

We hopped on the Waikiki Trolley Blue Line to view Diamond Head, the Halona Blow Hole, and other nearby spots, and we absolutely adored the experience.

We also rode the Waikiki Trolley Red Line to explore more of downtown Honolulu, including Chinatown, Punchbowl Cemetery, and the State Capitol. While we didn't enjoy that tour as much, it certainly provided a solid overview of the area.

The Waikiki Trolley Pink Line was a frequent ride for us. We relied on it as our primary shuttle to navigate the Waikiki Beach area (including the Ala Moana Shopping Center where we stocked up on groceries).

We only utilized the Bus service twice during our stay. One trip took us to the North Shore, and another brought us back to the airport. The bus functioned well (though I wouldn't suggest riding it alone after dark), but be prepared: a typical 30-minute drive can easily stretch to an hour.

Since we didn't rent a car and our hotel was close by, walking became a major part of getting to shuttle and bus stops, and then exploring on foot after arrival. If walking presents difficulties, I wouldn't advise this style of Oahu vacation.

Bus tours to specific destinations are another viable option. Numerous choices are available for this type of travel.

Navigating to prime snorkeling locations via public transit proved challenging, and we were unsure what snorkeling equipment to acquire.

We opted for a "snorkeling tour"; while the full-day excursion offered pleasant memories, the actual snorkeling experience was quite disappointing.

The provided snorkeling gear was of very poor quality, no usage guidance was offered, and the driver simply dropped us at a beach, promising to return after one hour.

Out of the entire bus group, only my husband and one other gentleman managed to operate the snorkels. The water was so shallow that my husband sustained minor abrasions on his hands and feet from the sharp reefs.

Therefore, it is wise to investigate thoroughly and ask numerous questions before committing to a bus tour on Oahu!

During our February stay in Oahu, we utilized our fanny packs, backpacks, sweaters, and sunglasses daily!

Packing Essentials for Oahu, Hawaii in February or March

Note: This content includes affiliate links for your shopping ease.

These are some items we packed for our trip that we are genuinely pleased we brought along!

  • Fanny pack – I am so glad these are back in style; we wore them EVERY DAY! This Pander Fanny Pack mimics a much pricier one and is the exact model I used. I adored it. My husband brought his genuine 90s vintage one, which resembles this.
  • Comfortable footwear – I cannot emphasize this enough! We joked that this vacation felt like the trips we hear about to New York because we walked so much. Do not pack shoes based only on appearance; you need your absolute most comfortable walking shoes. Mine were these flip flops (I walk countless miles in them every summer). However, if your best walking shoes are running shoes with socks, take them! We observed many runners wearing socks in Oahu. My husband’s blistered feet wish he had not deviated from his runners and socks for even a single day!!
  • Day pack/ light bag/ backpack – My husband carried his light canvas backpack every day, regardless of our planned activities. It held our lunch bag (we brought one like this), a water bottle (a major necessity there), a selfie stick (invaluable many times!), sunscreen (a type I am not sensitive to), sweaters, a rain poncho, and beach towels if required that day. I debated choosing this Volganik Rock bag for the trip, and it proved excellent. It was suitable for the flight and I used it as my day pack on some days too. Nevertheless, I discovered that trekking miles with heavy contents was difficult.
  • A light sweater or rain jacket – Our research suggested a sweater wouldn't be necessary on Oahu. Yet, both of us packed one just in case, and we are relieved we did. I wore mine every single day. Not for extended periods, but there were chilly moments daily. Locals informed us it was unusually cool, rainy, or windy when we were there – so prepare for every possibility. We often wished we had included a small umbrella or these disposable rain ponchos (which could prevent a $9 US emergency purchase!)
  • Clothing that layers and dries quickly – We noticed the Oahu weather could shift from cool to intensely hot in mere minutes. I had the added issue of full-body hives from an allergic reaction to sunless tanning lotion throughout our stay, making clothing crucial for me. Linen and cotton shorts and shirts were the most comfortable for me. While Oahu features denim shorts and flowing dresses, nothing is overly formal in attire. Wear what feels comfortable to you on a hot day at home, and you will be fine. My near-daily outfit (due to my hives) was a black linen skort paired with this affordable striped tshirt from Old Navy. I added a light sweater similar to this when the temperature dropped.
