How to Get Wrinkles Out of Clothes Without an Iron

Remove wrinkles from clothes without ironing using quick, easy tricks that work at home or while traveling.

I don’t remember who first showed me this tip, but over time it became one of my favorite ways to get wrinkles out of clothes, without pulling out an iron or steamer.

You know the moment: you reach into the closet or suitcase, grab a shirt you fully expected to wear, and it’s rumpled and wrinkled. Maybe it’s been hanging for a while, maybe it came out of a packed bag, or maybe you’re simply short on time. Either way, the last thing you want is to drag out the ironing board.

That’s when I fall back on this quick and easy wrinkle-removal trick I’ve used for years. It works at home and while traveling, and it takes advantage of something you’re already doing anyway.

Here’s how to get wrinkles out of clothes, no iron or steamer required.

Shower + Blow Dryer Method

  1. Hang the wrinkled shirt (or whatever you want to de-wrinkle) on a hook in the bathroom while you shower. The closer to the shower, the better. The steam will start to loosen the wrinkled areas.
  2. Once you’re dry, use your blow dryer on a medium to medium-high setting and blow air inside the garment. The combination of steam and warm air helps relax the wrinkles and freshens up the clothes.

This trick works well when you’re traveling and your clothes get a bit wrinkled from the suitcase, too.

I shared this trick in a short video you can watch below:

Nothing beats ironing or steaming, but here are some other clever no-iron, no-steamer ways to get wrinkles out of clothes, or at least make them a lot less wrinkly! ;) How well wrinkles release depends on the fabric, so keep that in mind.

  • I’ve heard great things about this wrinkle release spray. (The set even comes in a handy travel-size bottle.)
  • Put the wrinkled clothing in the dryer for a few minutes with an ice cube. The ice cube melts and creates a bit of moisture. Combined with the warm air of the dryer, the wrinkles loosen up.
  • Using the same idea, you could also toss the clothing in the dryer with a damp cloth and some dryer balls to loosen the wrinkles. (Dryer balls can also be used to make laundry smell good!)

How to prevent wrinkles in clothes

The best and easiest way to get wrinkle-free clothes is to prevent wrinkles in the first place. Here are a few tips for doing that:

  • When you travel, roll your clothes instead of folding them. Rolling helps prevent many of the wrinkles that folding creates.
  • Remove your clothes from the dryer as soon as they’re dry and hang them up right away.
  • I find that hanging clothes to dry sometimes makes them a bit wrinkly, so I toss them in the dryer while they’re still slightly damp and run the fluff cycle with some dryer balls to fluff out the wrinkles.
  • If you really want easy, breezy, no-wrinkle clothes, check the fabric carefully before you buy. Squeeze a handful of the fabric tightly to see how easily it wrinkles.
  • Leave some space between hanging clothes so they don’t crowd each other and wrinkle. I’ve found that thin velvet-covered hangers save a lot of space!
