Why Choosing Paint Color Seems Difficult and How to Simplify It

Picking a paint color is one of my favorite aspects of a room makeover…
Yet, it can also make me quite nervous!

If you have ever paused in the paint section questioning how to pick the perfect shade of blue, know that you are not solitary. Determining an interior color palette for your dwelling can feel utterly overwhelming.

After many years and several homes, I've gathered straightforward, proven advice that assisted me in confidently selecting coastal cottage paint colors. These pointers apply to any space, whether you seek a beachy mood or just a serene, crisp palette.

5 Suggestions for Selecting Coastal Cottage Paint Colors

Here are some methods I have utilized that guided me through the process of selecting shades fitting the coastal cottage aesthetic.

1. Begin with Your Preferences

Before viewing any paint sample, collect inspirational images.

  • Explore Pinterest, design magazines, and home décor websites.
  • Save photographs of rooms that capture your interest.
  • Observe the general mood these spaces convey. Bright, open, tranquil?

Tip: Organize your concepts using a Pinterest board or a phone folder.

2. Identify Recurring Color Schemes

As you review your inspiration photos, particular colors will likely appear repeatedly. For me, these were watery blues, seafoam greens, & whites.

These shades simply felt appropriate for me—calming, fresh, and enduring. Consider what colors resonate with you?

3. Explore the Specific Tones You Prefer

Suppose you adore blue. Wonderful! However, there are a vast number of blues available.

Viewing earlier episodes of Sarah’s Cottage helped me narrow my focus. The coastal kitchen she designed utilized a hue named “gray,” but it appeared blue-green in the actual room. That moment showed me the importance of lighting and undertones.

Look closely at the paint names in rooms you admire. You might be surprised by what they’re actually called!

Be sure to test color swatches in the exact room they’ll be used in.

4. Test Paint Colors the Smart Way

This step is crucial! A paint color can look completely different on your wall than it does in a photo or on a tiny swatch.

Here are 3 smart ways to test paint colors:

  • Paint poster boards with sample sizes and tape them to your wall. Move them around throughout the day to see how the light changes them.
  • Paint swatches directly on your wall, but be aware that your current paint color might affect how they look.
  • Use peel-and-stick samples (available online for popular brands like Benjamin Moore and Sherwin Williams).

5. Relax—It’s Just Paint!

Seriously. The best decorating advice I ever read was:

“It’s just paint.”

If you put it up and don’t love it, paint over it! Even the pros (like Sarah Richardson!) change their minds sometimes.
