Securely Mount Heavy Items with a French Cleat

Utilize a french cleat setup to suspend heavy items like art, mirrors, or decorative objects on your wall. You can craft one yourself using the guide below or buy a pre-made option online.

Sometimes the concluding stages of a project present a bit of a challenge for me.

Consider, for instance, the installation of our recently chalk-painted antique window.

Painting it itself was quite straightforward, but figuring out how to affix its *very* substantial weight to the wall was the real puzzle.

Fortunately, my husband uncovered this clever technique called a “french cleat” hanging system several years ago, and we have used it ever since.

What exactly is a french cleat hanging system?

This system fastens items to a wall employing a 45 degree incline that interlocks, creating a dependable hanging bracket.

For instance, one segment of a board cut at 45 degrees fastens to the wall, while the other part slides down and over it, forming a locking bracket. It provides excellent security for large and weighty pieces.

Instructions for shaping a french cleat from wood.

  1. Measure a wood strip matching the object's length, then use a table saw to slice it in half at a 45 degree angle to create the interlocking joint.

I must admit I don't fully grasp the 'cut at 45' aspect, as I missed my husband's demonstration at the wood shop. Nevertheless, a comprehensive tutorial on making a french cleat is provided here.

In this instance, my husband quickly created it in the workshop and returned, allowing us to continue our day.

3. Before attaching it to the object, pre-drill the upper section of the french cleat.

4. Secure the top piece of the french cleat to the item using screws.

5. Affix the lower section of the french cleat firmly to the wall.

Two critical points exist for this step. First, verify the bottom piece is oriented correctly; we tested this alignment prior to wall attachment. Second, ensure this part is screwed directly into the wall studs (a stud finder is beneficial). If it's not secured to the studs, your item is certain to fall!

6. After completing those tasks, gently slide the object down until the top board rests on the bottom board.

The 45 degree angle in the board will effectively 'lock' into place, ensuring great stability on your wall.

And there you have it! It is now safely and securely mounted on the wall…

Is it necessary to construct my own french cleat?

Not at all! Ready-made french cleats are available for purchase on Amazon; for example, a 12 inch french cleat is listed. Simply search for the dimension you require if a larger size is needed.
