Craft easy reversible accent pillow covers for holiday displays or everyday style with this simple sewing guide.
At some point earlier in the year, a neighborhood fabric shop announced its closure.
As discount rates improved, my vehicle seemed to gravitate toward that location more frequently!;)
While planning seasonal decorations (despite it being warm outside!), I selected some festive flannel textiles.
Eventually, I retrieved them from storage recently.
Quickly, they transformed into enjoyable reversible decorative pillows for our living room holiday arrangements.

Required Materials:
- Selected textile (Here is a wonderful range of cotton plaid patterns ideal for the season. However, verify they match your required dimensions.)
- Fastener a few inches briefer than the final pillow width in a coordinating shade. (My selection was an 18-inch closed-end fastener.)
- Sewing apparatus
- Cutting tools
- Seam undoing instrument
- Heat press
Slice two textile sheets to match the pillow you are sheathing, in two matching pattern styles.
To determine the cutting dimension, gauge your pillow insert and add half an inch to every side, upper and lower boundary. For example, if utilizing a 20-inch square insert, the material would be cut at 21 inches square (accounting for a half-inch seam on every border).
I have discovered that a self-repairing cutting board and rotary blade accelerates the cutting process and precision greatly! If, nevertheless, you lack one, you can always rely on tape measures, rulers, a builder’s square – or any aid that assists in achieving straight and precise cut lines.
With matching faces together, stitch a half-inch seam at the pillow base. Flatten the seam with a heat press.

Place the fastener face-down on the seam you just flattened and pin at the center of the seam line, ensuring the fastener teeth sit directly on top of the seam.

Change your sewing machine attachment to the fastener foot and stitch around all edges of the fastener.
(For another depiction of this method, you may wish to review the guide I composed for the faux leather pillow cover.)

On the exterior face, carefully separate the seam where the fastener is positioned underneath, and using a seam undoing instrument, pull apart the seam.
This is my preferred stage. Before your very eyes, a lovely fastener will appear!;)
Flip the zipper open, and aligning the right sides, stitch the remaining three edges together with a half-inch seam allowance.

Trim the corners of the cushion (taking care not to sever the stitching), and invert the cushion to the right side.

Insert the cushion form into the cover and fasten the zipper.

Voila! The project is complete.
You can now flip your decorative cushions to display whichever face you prefer.
I crafted ours as a neutral plaid design – ideal for the entire winter season – on one panel, with a red moose motif (for the holidays) on the reverse side.
