Easy Budget Faux Boxwood Wreath Tutorial

I have always admired boxwood wreaths in home styling and have been searching for some for a while, specifically needing 2 small faux boxwood wreaths for my entryway closet.

In my quest, it appears I have uncovered 2 things.

  1. Acquiring boxwood wreaths can be exceedingly costly if obtainable, and
  2. I was unable to locate any small sizes!

My investigation ultimately led to a DIY project, which proved to be a swift and enjoyable endeavor.

Crafting a Simple and Budget-Friendly Small Faux Boxwood Wreath

Materials Required:

  • Faux boxwood foliage
  • Foam Wreath Base (mine was sourced from Dollar Tree.)
  • Glue Gun
  • Wire Shears
  • A sturdy metal 'rod' such as a chopstick or knitting needle (to protect your fingers from hot glue)

First Step: Clean the faux boxwood leaves and divide them into small, separate sprigs.2 Small faux Boxwood wreaths

After extensive searching for inexpensive faux boxwood greenery, I located it on a large, post-Christmas clearance sale wreath for just $6! I then separated each boxwood bundle, rinsing them in a sink with water, a touch of dish soap, and vinegar.

Next, using wire cutters, I separated every boxwood branch into individual pieces; I found individual placement was superior to managing a larger floral pick.

Gluing on faux boxwood leaves to a small foam wreath form

Second Step: Adhere the boxwood leaves onto the foam wreath base, ensuring all leaves face the same way.

Being new to floral work, I doubted the difficulty, but it was surprisingly straightforward and very pleasant! Beginning at the outer rim of the form, I positioned a piece of greenery until it seemed to fit perfectly. Then, I applied a line of hot glue to the form, set the greenery down, and pressed it firmly using the tip of a long knitting needle (this prevents hot glue from burning your fingertips).

Many boxwood wreaths utilize grapevine forms, which are quite attractive, but these were unavailable in my area; thus, Dollar Tree foam bases were my solution. I worried the glue might damage the foam, but it did not.

Third Step: Continue gluing all the way around until both the front and sides of the wreath base are fully covered.

It was useful to periodically hold the wreath upright to confirm leaf symmetry around the form; if an area seemed thin, I simply added more glue and greenery until the desired dense appearance was achieved.

Fifth Step: Display them!

Once finished, the last action is to hang them and enjoy! Because these were made with foam, I simply drove a nail into the closet door and pressed the wreath into it at the preferred height; the nail pierces the foam and secures it firmly. So simple!

These wreaths would also suit a front door beautifully; looping a substantial burlap or linen ribbon over it and hanging it from a hook would look wonderful!
