This old fashioned sloppy joes recipe comes straight from my mom’s recipe box — savory ground beef in a tangy homemade sauce, ready in one skillet in under 30 minutes. No packaged mix needed!

What you’ll love about this recipe:
- QUICK TO MAKE IN ONE SKILLET – Sloppy joes are my go to recipe when my day has been long, it’s dinner time, and nothing is ready! I’ve made this so many times that I don’t even need to look at the recipe anymore…From start to finish, you can have dinner on the table in under 30 minutes.
- KID FRIENDLY – Kids and adults love these sandwiches! They are a perfect menu item if you need to feed a group of teens or elementary school kids. In fact, my mom’s recipe card has measurement calculations for how to make this recipe with 10 pounds of hamburger! I think she fed them to the whole church…;)
- EASY CLEANUP – This meal can be made in just one skillet – making doing the dishes a whole lot easier.
- NO SPECIAL PACKAGED INGREDIENTS NEEDED – I’ve seen packaged sloppy joe mixes that you can purchase in the store, but this old fashioned classic recipe doesn’t need any of that. The easy sloppy joe sauce is just a few ingredients that you probably already have in the door of your refrigerator.;)
- THESE CLASSIC SLOPPY JOES TASTE DELICIOUS! – I don’t mean to brag, but sloppy joes are kind of my thing… I LOVE them and have tried all different recipes over the year. But, hands down, this classic recipe of my mom’s is the BEST!!

Ingredients You’ll Need for Homemade Old Fashioned Sloppy Joes
(Please refer to the printable recipe card at the bottom of the post for exact measurements and instructions. You can print it on your home printer and put it in your favorite recipes binder!)
- Lean or extra lean ground beef – The hearty base of the sloppy joes, providing rich flavor.
- Diced onion (optional) – Adds a touch of sweetness and depth (it can be omitted if picky eaters in your family don’t like onions).
- Olive oil (if using a cast iron skillet) – Helps prevent sticking and adds a little extra flavor.
- Ketchup ( Our family says it must be Heinz for the best flavor!) – The key ingredient for a classic tangy-sweet sauce.
- White sugar – Balances the acidity and enhances the overall sweetness.
- White vinegar – Adds a bit of zippy tang to the sauce.
- Yellow mustard – Brings a subtle tang and a little sharpness to the mix.
- Worcestershire sauce – Deepens the flavor with a rich, savory umami kick.
- Hamburger buns – The classic “vessel” for holding all the delicious, saucy goodness. However, we’ve also used flour tortillas, or served sloppy joes over sweet potatoes, too.
Step by step instructions for Mom’s Recipe for Homemade Sloppy Joes
Start by browning your ground beef in a skillet, along with the diced onion if you’re using it, until it’s cooked through and no longer pink. Drain off any extra grease, then it’s time for the fun part — the sauce! Stir in the ketchup, sugar, vinegar, mustard, and Worcestershire sauce right into the beef, and let it all simmer together until it’s thick, saucy, and smells like something Mom used to make.
Honestly, I’ve made this recipe so many times I could do it with my eyes closed — I just dump the sauce ingredients in by feel these days instead of measuring! But if you’re making it for the first time, the printable recipe card below has the exact amounts to get you started.
Spoon it warm onto a soft hamburger bun, and dinner is done.

1.Saute hamburger and onions until the beef is browned and onions transluscent.
2.Add all the sloppy joe sauce ingredients into the skillet of cooked hamburger.
3.Stir the ingredients together and simmer for a few minutes.

Where did this old fashioned sloppy joe recipe come from?
This sloppy joe recipe came directly from my Mom’s recipe box. She made this for our family many, many times when I was growing up. And, it was one of the first recipes I made on my own!

Classic Old Fashioned Sloppy Joes Recipe
Indulge in this timeless loose meat sandwich! Browned beef blanketed in the simplest yet most delicious homemade sauce, served on a soft bun, makes this a beloved family dinner. Prepared quickly in one skillet using basic pantry staples.
Ingredients
Method
- Remove the outer layer from the onion and cut it into small cubes.
- When using a cast iron skillet, pour in the olive oil and heat the medium-sized pan until a piece of onion makes a sizzling sound upon contact.
- Introduce the diced onions and ground beef to the preheated pan and cook them, stirring occasionally, until the onions become transparent and the meat loses its pink color, which typically takes around five minutes.
- Eliminate the surplus fat from the meat mixture by shifting the contents to one side of the pan and angling it so the grease pools on the other side. Utilize a spoon or ladle to extract all the accumulated grease, transferring it to a container or can for later disposal in the trash. (Remember to never pour grease down the sink!)
- Incorporate the ketchup, granulated sugar, vinegar, mustard, and Worcestershire sauce into the meat mixture currently in the pan. Mix thoroughly until everything is well combined and the concoction reaches a simmering temperature.
- Present the hot sloppy joe mixture by portioning the meat mixture and placing it inside a hamburger bun.
