Easy Ways to Tidy Up Your Living Space

Feeling ready to clear out clutter and maintain that neatness? These 10 helpful decluttering suggestions will ease the feeling of being overwhelmed, resulting in a calm, open, and tidy residence.

I have always enjoyed keeping my home organized and felt quite capable of regular decluttering.

However, we subsequently reduced the size of our home significantly.

Transitioning to a dwelling that was roughly one-third the size of our former residence truly tested my skills in both organization and decluttering!

During this journey, I discovered several crucial techniques and simple methods that prove extremely beneficial for both major cleanouts and ongoing upkeep.

If you also aspire to inhabit a less cluttered environment, here are some helpful pointers to guide you toward a clutter-free home.

Simple Ways to Declutter Your Home

1. Visualize the ultimate outcome of an organized home

Everyone needs motivation to initiate and complete a project.

As you start decluttering, always keep your desired final state in mind.

Picture the sense of ease and tranquil ambiance found in a clutter-free home.

Allow that vision to propel your progress with your home organization ideas.

2. Formulate a strategy for decluttering your residence

Numerous paths exist for beginning a full home organization project; however, I suggest tackling it incrementally.

The final aesthetic is entirely up to your personal preference.

Here are a few possibilities:

  • Employ a timer and dedicate 15 minutes daily to tidying one spot.
  • Utilize a decluttering checklist (such as the one in this article) to focus on one room every week.
  • Collect items in a trash bag daily (or weekly) for donation to a thrift store.
  • Accelerate your home decluttering by inviting a friend to assist you for a few hours.

No matter your decluttering approach, taking action is superior to doing nothing.

3. Establish a designated drop-off location

When starting to declutter, set aside a specific spot for items intended for donation, sale, or gifting; then, address these piles when your schedule permits.

We have a bench in our garage where a box is permanently set aside for the thrift store. As we find items we wish to give away, they go into that box. Once the volume necessitates a store visit, we load it into the car and take it to the store.

Cultivate a positive outlook on tidying up

Many individuals feel anxious about the decluttering process, often stuck by the large uncertainty of:

“What if I need this later?”

The worry of later wishing you discarded something prevents people from even beginning to tidy up!

Instead, consider the liberation that comes from

  • possessing less 'belongings' to manage and finding more room
  • requiring less cleaning and upkeep
  • gaining extra space for activities you enjoy
  • purchasing fewer things and selecting items you will genuinely adore and use often

I reached a point where my 'things' felt like a weight rather than a gift. Excessive possessions can cause strain and stress.

5. Begin with items that hold the least emotional value

Items that carry deep feeling are those we cherish most. Save these for the end of your tidying adventure. By then, you will have gained substantial sorting and purging experience. I found the kon marie method of home organization particularly useful for determining the proper order for tackling decluttering.

Garments and miscellaneous drawers offer an excellent starting point. Remember, each small organizational achievement builds confidence as you approach deciding on sentimental items.

6. Ponder key inquiries when tidying your dwelling

These questions will assist you in deciding whether to keep, discard, donate, or sell an object.

  • Have I utilized this within the last twelve months?
  • Have I even remembered owning this?
  • If something is damaged, am I truly going to mend it?
  • Does this piece of apparel still fit me?
  • Does wearing this clothing make me feel good?

If you answered no to any of those questions, it is quite evident that letting go of those items will not lead to regret!

Inquiries for gifted items:

  • Do I actually use this item?
  • Does this object evoke pleasant recollections?
  • Can I envision utilizing this item in the future?

If not, feel free to discard it; letting go of a gift does not diminish your regard for the giver. Ensure proper disposal to avoid unintended offense, such as not selling something your mother-in-law provided on a Facebook page she might view!

7. Discover creative and thoughtful methods for sentimental possessions

I am quite sentimental, yet despite significantly downsizing, I feel no remorse regarding cherished, meaningful items.

Here are some inventive approaches for handling sentimental things:

  • Utilize them! If you adore Grandma’s china and silverware, why merely keep it for yearly Christmas use? Instead, keep it in your cupboard and use it regularly; it will spark wonderful memories at every meal.
  • Share treasured heirlooms with family members who value their narrative. I gave my precious hope chest to one of my sons when it simply wouldn't fit in our compact home. I am delighted that it and its history remain within the family.
  • Digitize treasured family recipe cards and transform them into recipe card gifts.
  • Convert old picture albums into family history books by scanning the photos and documenting the related stories. Platforms such as Shutterfly simplify this process.
  • Display it. Incorporating sentimental items as home decor enhances the cozy atmosphere and narrates your distinct family tale.

8. Allocate a dedicated zone for specific belongings

Sometimes, spatial constraints guide how much we should retain or acquire.

For instance, as a home decor blogger and enthusiast, I must diligently manage my seasonal decorations within a single closet. Once it overflows, I know it's time for a review and some reductions.

This truly helps me adhere to the “one in, one out” principle!

9. Purchase attractive storage only after defining your exact needs

I regret to inform you that the key to organization is not acquiring more decorative baskets or color-matched labels.

While potentially frustrating, you must complete the decluttering before buying organizational aids and containers!

Without knowing precisely what needs storing and its placement, you will squander money on unsuitable or ill-fitting items, which will only INCREASE your mess!

10. Establish daily routines to tidy your home

While major decluttering projects are occasionally necessary, much effort is saved by cultivating daily tidying habits.

Some of these habits include:

  • Address incoming paper mail promptly. (Place junk mail in the trash/recycling and important documents in a file.)
  • Return misplaced items to their proper locations immediately.
  • Employ a collection box to stash belongings when you realize they are no longer necessary or utilized.
