An oven-baked hamburger steak without gravy is ready in mere minutes using basic pantry items and a ketchup-barbecue topping for a simple family meal.

When I was newly married and starting to cook nightly dinners, I spent a significant amount of time reviewing various recipes.
I happened upon my Grandma’s original recipe file and thoroughly enjoyed going through its contents.
Within the well-organized “meats” section, I discovered a recipe from my Aunt Violet titled Baked Hamburgers.
This is a fast, easy meal that requires only a short preparation time, and the taste is wonderful!
Ingredients needed for hamburger steak in the oven:
This quick recipe utilizes only a few common pantry staples. (Precise amounts are detailed on the downloadable recipe card.)
- Ground beef
- Oatmeal
- Milk
- Onion soup mix
- Salt and pepper
- Ketchup
- Barbecue sauce of your preference
Instructions for Hamburger Steak without Gravy, Step by Step

- Begin by combining the ground beef, oatmeal, onion soup mix, milk, salt, and pepper in a sizable bowl; while a spoon can assist, hands will achieve the best mixture. Shape a substantial amount into a patty, and here is a tip from watching Rachel Ray: create a slight indentation in the middle of each one, as they will expand while baking.
- Drizzle ketchup and barbecue sauce liberally over every patty; this action completely substitutes for homemade gravy, delivering flavor without the extra effort. Bake at 350 degrees, uncovered, for 30 to 45 minutes, until the beef is no longer pink internally. That concludes it—dinner is nearly prepared!

Guidance on how to freeze Hamburger Steak for later use:
As there are only two of us eating dinner presently, I preserved the surplus hamburger steaks for future consumption. (I enjoy cooking in batches and freezer meals!)
This shows how to adapt this hamburger steak recipe into a meal suitable for freezing:

- Per the recipe card's instructions, form the burgers and arrange them on a sheet of parchment paper. Subsequently, place them uncovered in the freezer.
2. After approximately 2 hours, take them out and seal them in a large Zip-loc freezer bag. This ensures they freeze separately and won't clump. You can also select only the quantity of burgers needed for each meal.
Instructions for baking frozen hamburger steaks
There are two methods for cooking frozen food
- A good approach is to allow it to completely thaw first; simply move the hamburger steaks from the freezer to the fridge until thawed, then proceed with baking as if they were fresh
- Baking directly from frozen is my preferred technique; position the frozen hamburger steaks on a baking dish, then incorporate ketchup and bbq sauce. Cover with foil and put it in an oven preheated to 350 degrees. Bake for 30 minutes with the foil on. After that, remove the foil and bake for an additional 30 minutes. Keep an eye on them during baking, because the time might vary depending on the size of the hamburger steak patties

What side dishes pair well with baked hamburger steak
We enjoy serving ours alongside a green salad and baked sweet potatoes. Furthermore, they taste excellent with mashed potatoes, smashed potatoes, potato salad, or tator tots
How to prevent oatmeal visibility in hamburger steak
If the presence of oatmeal in the burger is unappealing, you have an alternative method available
Combine the oatmeal, onion soup mix, and milk in a blender. Blend until completely smooth. Then, mix this blended preparation into the ground beef thoroughly
